University of Michigan Deferred Applicants Class of 2022

He was told by a number of people that if he does not get in as a freshmen he can try to Transfer in, they seemed to think that this was easier.

@MoTownBlues I wasn’t really referring to chances but more about the waiting game. In your example, it just means they have a pool of “undecided” to choose from and we are not privy to how many that is or how many they need. The same may hold true for the reverse - a very defined area of study with an abundant yield of applicants. We just don’t know.

My point is to not give up hope simply because it is taking a little longer. Come fall, al freshmen will arrive on campus at the same time regardless of when you received your acceptance notification. It’s not how fast you get there, its that you do.

@098123Student thanks, I think wherever he goes he’'ll be successful, just hard for a parent to watch their kids dream slip away when they worked so hard for it. I know I’m not alone and not unique. He’ll do fine though.

@johnrh… Life lessons suck. Sometimes you do all the right things and it still doesn’t work out. How he deals with it and moves on will show his character etc. Many kids “think” they are going to transfer and then find out they are just fine where they are situated. But I agree, sometimes it is harder on the parents also. With his stats etc he will be just fine.

I am completely with you! What will be will be. At this point all we can do is wait. I just wish we’d get a decision soon so we can make plans.

@billcsho, thanks for the stats on admissions. I feel extremely fortunate to have been admitted OOS EA.

Deep down inside, I feel that this is the school I will most likely choose to attend. I am serious enough about it that my family and I will be visiting the campus on Campus Day in a couple weeks for a weekend getaway from here in Los Angeles.

For what it is worth, I was one of the in-state EA deferred people who didn’t get accepted until the first week of April last year too. This waiting was excruciating.

I had pretty much embraced my MSU Honors acceptance to the point that, when my UM acceptance came, I had to go to Campus Day before I was ready to forgive them for having put me through this waiting agony!! From what I remember, the next two weeks are going to be a whirlwind as HS graduation approaches, parties are being planned, and the idea of college gets real.

Embrace this moment in your life - and breathe.

Glad it worked in your favor! My son is holding out also but should be getting answers from the other honors colleges this week. UofMich is his top choice but he knows he has to keep his options open elsewhere too. Ill be glad when the waiting is over!! My son is just checking WA on Fridays and keeping busy,

Is a wave this friday likely?

I think the wave is 3/23 but no one can be sure

I cannot find the Michigan RD thread, and so, am posting here! My D has not received anything from Michigan; she applied before the Nov 1 EA deadline, RD by accident, Anyway, Michigan has had her app for over 4 months, with no further communications. Good student. Multiple APs / Mid 1500s SAT / UW GPA of 3.93ish (don’t know weighted) OOS etc. I am told decisions are rolling … losing hope!

@hockeymom2000 - According to the 2017-2018 common data set, Michigan offered about 11,000 waiting list spots, about 4000 accepted a waiting spot, and 468 were accepted (no, those are not typos). The previous year only 38 were accepted off the list. The year before that, 90.

Why would the next wave be 3/23 and not this Friday (3/16)?

That’s just what I’ve been reading. Honestly, waiting for this school is stressing me out because last Friday I waited until 12EST to get a response and there was no wave that day. So, I’m just going to try to ignore it for now haha

Does anyone have an idea when the decision will come out this year ?

I don’t think that is accurate. My son’s High School about 30mins from UMich usually has around 40 students who end up attending Michigan each year.

Have been reading this forum since our son was deferred and while appreciating the process…and recognizing every parents kid is the best (we are all proud prents after all), I’m still amazed that our child who had tons of leadership examples, great recommendations, a 4.0 unweighted/5.0 weighted GPA, 1540 on the SAT (790 Math), Multiple National/Regional Awards and even aced Calculus 3 received a letter deferring him. And yes, I know it is a form letter but asking for mid year grades to strengthen his case was just ridiculous. I get it’s a great school but I’m the meantime with each day the desire to attend UM diminishes as other college options are explored. A very odd process. (PS. Having received early admission to other schools, just as prestigious, UM has likely lost a candidate due to the process)

@notmichael5 In state or out of state and which school did he apply? Stats are pretty incredible.

The same kids that get denied or accepted from Michigan get accepted or denied from Cornell, Northwestern, Berkeley, Washington University St. Louis, Vanderbilt, etc. They all must be looking for different things. Sometimes this doesn’t make a lot of sense. +

@notmichael5 I’m trying to figure out why he was not yet admitted. Your son looks very accomplished. I assume that you are OOS, where the admissons rate is likely around 20% for this entering class. I also assume that he took advantage of the APs and Honors offered by the high school and was a rigorous academic curriculum. If so, then the possible reasons for the deferral (and why he has not yet gotten admitted during the past few waves of decisions on deferred students) are that there is a perceived lack of demonstrated interest in Michigan in particular. Has he ever visited the school and had his visit been recorded by admissons? They do track this. During this admissions process has he ever reached out to the local admissions representative for the area where your son’s high school is located? After he was deferred did he soon after (within 3 or 4 weeks) submit a good letter of continued interest AND follow up with a phone call and speak to his local admissons representative to say he would attend (assuming he actually would) if admitted? Did his essays show enthusiasm for Michigan in particular, showing how the university is a good fit? In this day and age of college admissons, such hoops are necessary and a student’s marketing of himself is just as important as his or her credentials for purposes of admisson to the most selective universities. If the answer is yes to all the above then it could be that he applied to the most difficult college (college of engineering) for admissons where OOS admissons rate is less than 20% and where the other applicants have similar stats as himself.
