University of Michigan Deferred Applicants Class of 2022

@notmichael5 Your DS appears nearly the same as our DC, who was accepted early - but deferred early by other schools that I felt were more likely to accept DC … OOS Engineering, no visits to or communications with Michigan, essays were enthusiastic about Michigan, but no real Michigan hooks. If there was any difference, perhaps it was a demonstrated interest in international engineering studies. This seems so much like a lottery at some point. And like you, I am feeling that the deferral schools caused me to lose some heart for those schools. Hang in there - I suspect more than one good choice will be available for your son!

I applied to CoE. How much do they consider the math section of the ACT? I got 34 on math but a 31 overall.

Great points. OOS and Engineering and Demonstrated Interest not as strong prior to deferral but then demonstrated interest with interviewer, local school rep etc…not sure what can be done around the process and totally sensitive to the numbers and the volume that the admission group must go through…will see what happens and really the reason for the post (other than slight venting) was so others could take heart if their kid was deferred or not accepted…I know seeing others rough transcripts that have been deferred or not accepted has provided us with peace of mind knowing everything will work out as it should and there are lots of others in the same situation. Good luck to everyone!

@098123Student well I guess that gives us all a little bit of hope  It makes everyone more and more depressed every time a wave of decisions come and still don’t here anything. People keep saying that getting your decision in April means rejection or waitlist, so it’s nice to know that there is still a chance. And yeah, senior year is supposed to be a breeze, but it’s not for the most part with grad parties and college… Hopefully at the end we can relax FINALLY

“(PS. Having received early admission to other schools, just as prestigious, UM has likely lost a candidate due to the process)”

If your child has gotten into “other schools, just as prestigious,” you should just sit back and relax with that knowledge.

hear* sorry >-< autocorrect wants to make it here for some reason

Haven’t read the entire thread, and was unable to find an obvious answer via web search…

If deferred for early action, when can we expect an answer from UMich?

They are apparently rolling out decisions every Friday until April.

Thanks for the info mclmom.

Do they send email, or do you need to check their portal?

@mrfeh They send email. But, there is a time lag between the portal and email. We have seen portals update mainly at midnight (though people have seen their portal updated at different times as well) and the emails have been consistent around 3 PM

@mclmom @mrfeh this is 100% incorrect. Not every Friday. There were no decisions last Friday for example. There have been 2 large batches, one early Feb, one beg. March. If past years equals future, next batch will be 3/23 or 3/30 at Midnight ET.

@brownsie000 Relax? I thought it was all going to be over by April 1 last year, and my daughter was strung along on 2 waitlists through JULY. Michigan was one of them. This is a terrible process and I seriously think Michigan is one of the worst offenders. As @notmichael5 expressed, getting a bit turned off by Michigan now…

Its not alway on Friday either, my friends son got in on a Wednesday in the beginning of March.

No one should put much hope on wait list at any school. One should treat it as the game has been over. Don’t blame the school if you are willing to be put on the wait list. You know the chance of admission is very low and it may take a couple months if it ever happens. All wait lists work that way.
Also, don’t blame the school that notified the admitted students earlier than their deadline. You are the one that want to check if there are early admission notices for other people from the forum. You are supposed to wait for the email for your decision notice and they promise it by early April. The school did not tell the applicants to check the decision every week or on certain Friday midnight.

Waitlist question - if someone gets waitlisted to their top choice and rejected everywhere else is it possible to take a productive gap year and gain acceptance in the next round without starting over in the application process?

@hockeymom2000 No. You will need to apply again. UMich offered guaranteed sophomore transfer to some of the wait-listed students a couple years ago. One would still need to submit the transfer application though. Wait list by itself does not offer you anything.

@billcsho With all due respect, you write as if we live in a vacuum. Of course, we all want to find out at the earliest possible date if we got in. So, especially when you know that Michigan does rolling admissions, the eagerness is going to get the best of us and we will want to check frequently - especially when you know that the school has released a wave. It is just normal human behavior. Every one that’s waiting for a response from Michigan has worked really hard to put themselves in a position to get into their dream school, U mich in this case. So, if we see other kids getting in and you haven’t heard from the school, it is very natural to get discouraged and that’s where all the frustration is coming from.

Everyone who is frustrated with the wait here will be over the moon if they find out that they have been admitted and all will be forgotten and forgiven. But, until then, this “blaming” the school is nothing but an outlet for people who are nothing more than nervous that they may not get into their dream school.

Again, I totally value your inputs and you’ve been extremely good with giving out very valuable information on this forum and I totally appreciate it. But, at the same time, when people use this forum to vent, I think it’s ok to let them do that and not feel the need to defend U Mich at every possible opportunity. It’s a public forum and not everything has to be 100% logical

@billcsho you have to remember that you’re talking to teenagers and parents of teenagers. for those who have UM as a first choice, it’s impossible to shake the stress that has been brought upon us by their ridiculous process for notifying students of their decision. and yes, it is ridiculous to move 85% of early action applicants into the regular decision pool. obviously we’re going to be checking at all times. it’s human nature to be anxious over something like this.

@csekar15 I certainly understand people are eager to find out the admission result. My younger D is also waiting for a few RD result later this week to some time in the next couple weeks from other schools. However, this is the only school subforum at CC that I see people constantly complaining the admission process even UMich is ahead of many schools and their promise deadline in releasing the admission notice for the benefit of the students. I just found it ridiculous.
