University of Michigan Deferred Applicants Class of 2022

@rjkofnovi It would be hard with the current yield rate. It may just drive the students away. Unless they can meet the need for all students, otherwise, there will be a lot of ED withdrawal due to insufficient aid and defeat the purpose of ED.

@curveboi All 38000 EA applicants demonstrated interest by applying early. However, there are many other ways to demonstrate interest too. At the end they are still selecting for better candidates. The question is how do you know they have not already given an edge to those applied EA and deferred? Isn’t the first RD batch with much more EA deferred than other RD admissions. They cannot just admit a student because of applying early. Otherwise there is no need for RD. The admission process is not first come first serve.

@Knowsstuff great point, your feedback and @billcsho feedback hasn’t gone unnoticed… when I was applying year ago, threads on here were super helpful too.

@curveboi I don’t know of any rule against a state university having ED. My understanding is William & Mary (a state school) does have it. As @billcsho said, one problem is how it would interact with not meeting need for all students, although I think there are universities that do not guarantee this that have ED.

My personal view is that the environment has shifted with many top universities adopting ED and using it more heavily recently. I believe this will make it harder for UM to not change in some way. Both because they’ll lose some top students who ED elsewhere figuring they can always EA or RD to UM, and because applicants will just get more used to having it all sorted out before the end of March. No question though it is much harder for a big school to move to ED than the smaller privates that use it heavily now.

public universities can’t have ED @turtle17

My “View Decision” just went away.

“View Decision” still there for me.

Welp taking the L

Still have the decision tab as well

My decision tab disappeared around February 8th when they received my mid-year grades and has been gone ever since (still never received a decision).

my decision tab is still there too

My tab is also still there :((

My tab is still there

Mine is still there…

@billcsho has been giving all of all a lot of insight and advice since almost the beginning on this thread. He does NOT have to do this, and we should be thanking him instead. I know it is stressful, believe me, I think non-stop about it; at the end of the day, we were deferred because they wanted to see more or review it a second time. This is now out of our control. Its frustrating to be stuck speculating, yet what can we do but wait. We are better off just waiting for an email.

For decades and decades Michigan kids knew to get their apps into UofM before November. It was rolling admission and your best shot was to get the app in early. Nothing has really changed except they now have a real deadline of Nov 1 called EA. Personally i’d Like to see them return to rolling and get rid of EA. All EA has done is cause kids to have expectations about when they should be accepted or denied. I am sorry for the stressed out kids.

Many public unis have rolling and maybe you hear something in 2 days, sometimes 2 weeks, sometimes 2 months and sometime you don’t hear until spring.

I think it is OK to vent but understand this is a public university and the concept of EA and the interpretation of what that means may be based on what you have experienced at much, much smaller places.

I do not see them ever going to ED because frankly that is less fair for the OSS they hope to attract and coul tesult in even less out of state acceptances in December.

Also common thinking around EA is to get your safety in the hopper so there is an early acceptance and a guaranteed place to attend. .not necessarily to get your reach school in your pocket. And frankly UofM is now a reach for just about everyone who is not at the tippy top of their Michigan based high school.

Rest assured you all will know one way or another before you have to make a commitment to UofM or one of your other choices. Ranting is allowed but maybe healthier to direct energy elsewhere.

a few new links have popped up since i last checked (I could also be imagining things but who knows) I don’t believe I had the view financial aid award summary + notices link as well as the parent/family authorization link last week (i am probably imagining things)

My view decision tab is still there and the links for view financial aid award summary and parent/family authorization link have always been there for me @wowisntthisfun

There have been rumors that there are two more waves coming. One is said to be this Friday and the last one is on 3/30 (this one includes rejections & waitlists).

The old rolling system is basically multiple rounds of EA without fixed schedule. It may even be worse for those applied early September and did not get accepted but deferred. It is a kind of having just the RD rolling like now but started in September. If you read the thread about the transition to EA in 2010, the implement of EA was actually trying to make it less stressful to the students. From the perspective of students, it would be best to have a true rolling admission with a guaranteed turn around time but no deferral like some other schools. However, it would be very hard for a popular school like UMich as that would likely overwhelm them with most of the applications in the early rounds. Also, it may be not fair to some students depending on when they submit the application as the adcom would not know how the current batch of applicants compared with the next batch, and are forced to make decisions within the time frame. For these reasons, those true rolling schools are usually the lower tier ones and they would just finish the admission process when the quota is filled. Their intention is not to admit the best students but simply qualified students. So this kind of true rolling admission would not happen at UMich.

No matter what, we will all know soon. In the end yes, going to UMich is the dream. If that doesn’t happen, you will go to another school and you will learn just as you would there. After all is said and done and you graduate or continue on ( pre-med ,etc) ultimately, you are going to determine who you are, not the school you attended. You could go to UMich and get great training but still be a terrible doctor, someone else could go to a less prominent college and be a well respected doctor or vice-versa. You are all bright or you wouldn’t be here. You’ll be successful wherever you land. My son’s long term goal is med school and I really hope he can get into Umich for undergrad but if not, he will still reach his goals one way or another.
