University of Michigan Deferred Applicants Class of 2022

I know I’m being ridiculous but the name brand matters a lot, especially when trying to go to grad school or getting a job. I have no reason to believe that some “no name school” or a lower tier will help in getting a job.

@jj1999 it matters a ton especially for in state kids. if you compare it to a school like Michigan State which is the only other big school in the state there is a huge drop off. Getting a degree there would benefit you for a local job but umich is recognized globally where as many other schools are not. While people are saying that we control our future jobs it doesn’t help getting a degree from a non name brand school

You may think so now, but do you ask all professionals where they went to school? All I’m saying is I don’t go around asking my dentist where he went to school, it doesnt matter if he is good. Yes having UMich on your job app looks good but its not everything.

Can’t disagree more. The name of the school might help you get your foot in the door for your first job. After that not so much. You will be based on your work history. There are tons of examples of this. Just look up various business /engineering or start up leaders and see where they came from. Many are from no name schools. Having michigan on your resume will never hurt you, your work ethic is what will make you successful.

It’s not at all clear that coming from a name-brand school, whatever that means, is helpful if you don’t do well at that school. I just checked the diplomas of the neurosurgery MDs at our hospital and they are all over the place.

This is an interesting article that hones in on my opinion…and experience.

I agree with @psssthoy. See my 3.11.18 post. I used to work at a prestige law firm in Northern California. Yes, many attorneys were from Boalt, Stanford, Yale, Georgetown, etc. But our “look book” of resumes showed many very successful partners at my firm went to third and fourth tier law schools. I graduated top of my class at a 4th tier law school. While it was unusual for students from my law school to receive offers from this firm, the top students did. I also know someone who went to San Jose State University and got into a Stanford PhD program in Biochem. Yes, these are the exceptions but, on the other hand, it’s not super rare. The cream rises to the top. Admissions Committees make lots and lots of mistakes, failing to identify those will work the hardest and be the most successful. Don’t let the AdComms have so much control over you. If you’re in the running for UofMich, then that means your second and third choice schools are going to be just fine and will help you get to where you want to go. Stay committed to who you are, what you want and don’t let an admissions committee or anything else for that matter shake your confidence. Trust me, success in school, career, and life is about working hard, staying confident, overcoming challenges, and never giving up.

This is very true and exactly what I meant. I am an RN and in the job I do, I go to many physician’s offices. Many of the orthopedics physicians I have spoken to have said it doesnt matter where you do your undergrad work. Just do well, what matters most are your MCAT scores those will be you deciding factor for admission to med school. I’m sure it’s the same idea for most other post graduate programs.

@Santander well said. Hopefully some of the students reading all this will believe us all now.

Good luck with that. Young people grew up with brands from the time they came into the world so develop affinities. But yes…a student applying to UofM probably has a list of applications at unis that will get them where they want to go in life. So all waiting should have a plan. If not this uni than which uni.

Of course it is all about our work ethic etc but having umich can’t hurt. There are more opportunities and more recognition there. I’m assuming that whoever applied and really wants to attend umich has a fantastic work ethic. I’m not discrediting that it is possible to succeed elsewhere but simply saying that it helps and makes things much simpler

So do we say the wave is this friday or next friday?

@nesta233 at this point we just have to wait and see

We got bamboozled so many times in the past, but I’m still hoping to hear back this Friday.
Does anybody know when the View Decision tabs start to disappear?

@davy901 usually between 6-8pm

By friday you guys mean friday 12 AM or Saturday 12 AM???

@RACOON1012 Friday morning

I’m gonna bet we all hear by April :wink:

any update on decision date/time? When do you think it’ll come?

Does it matter what majors you stated in your application since everyone is admitted to LSA as undeclared?
