@brantly was expecting some merit award to offset the OOS tuition. If there’s none, will have to consider other option.
@MoTownBlues I am IS for Madison, bur was also IS for Michigan if accepted due to divorced parents, one of whom lives in MI. UW Madison is a top 30 public research university and campus life is amazing, but I dont think $55k per yr us worth it for OOS. I’m not a fan of MSU in general, but education, and life, really, is what you make it. And crippling student debt is an avoidable mistake. Just my opinion. Good luck with your decision. Go Badgers!
@raindowninafrica hey sorry my notifications were flooded since I bookmarked so many threads. I got my email at this time: Wed, Mar 28, 2018 at 5:09 PM
My son was accepted IS on Friday 12 AM. Thanks everyone for advice and talk, and @billcsho for your info.
Can anyone share what their WL email said? According to last years thread there were different responses, but I don’t know if one is necessarily better than the other. Also, would bring a double legacy help at all in getting off the WL?
@sophs17 There are multiple people on here that have been waitlisted with legacy status, unfortunately. I feel bad for all since most seem very qualified. Here is what Michigan states as their evaluation for waitlist applicants and % the last three years. Most should look hard at their other options. Good luck!
"If we do have space, deciding who to admit is based on multiple, comprehensive reviews of each application, focusing on the quality of academic preparation in high school, grades, scores on the ACT with writing and/or SAT with Essay, personal characteristics and attributes, responses to the short answer and essay questions, and recommendations from high school teachers.’
Students who were admitted from the waitlist:
Fall 2015: 2%, or 90 students
Fall 2016: 1%, or 36 students
Fall 2017: 11%, or 470 students
The waitlist data is quite interesting. In the last two years, Michigan offered 11,000 applicants a place on the waiting list each year (that is, more than the entire freshman class). About 4000 accepted that place on the waiting list, suggesting that most of those offered a place on the waiting list got in somewhere else that they wanted to go more (because of preference, financial aid, or whatever), simply didn’t want to continue the process, or some other reason.
Here are the links to the last two years (the wait list information is on page 4 of each):

Thanks! @BreakfastClub1 and @PSCJ12 based on the large amount of people who were accepted off the wait list last year will that affect this years process? Or does it all depend on how many people ultimately enroll
@sophs17… It will depend on how many actually accept the waitlist… But the reality is accept it but move to your next school choice. There is almost no chance you are getting off the wait list. Get excited about your new opportunities. But… If in July you get a notice that you are off the waitlist then you will have another option to dwell over.
Anyone have a guess when to next wave is? I’m trying my best to be patient.
Go Blue in the Final Four!
@BorntobeatUofM i am wondering the same thing. I would think sometime very soon.
@PSCJ12 sorry to correct you… IN THE CHAMPIONSHIP GAME MONDAY!!!
Portal is down
@BorntobeatUofM They are coming out almost every day. They came out Friday morning and Saturday morning. I don’t think there will be another big wave like the last three or else it would be hard for accepted students to visit or make a good decision so close to the May 1st deadline.
There is also a wave of students that can get accepted their sophomore year (deferred acceptance). Don’t quote me on this but during my year that is what happened to me. Do they still do this?
Does anyone have any idea what it means if we haven’t heard yet? Is it bad or good? When could we for sure know by?
We are in the same boat, with the same questions. I am still hoping that they are just waiting for people to not accept their admissions, so they have room for us.
@BorntobeatUofM I would hope you are correct as my sister is currently a freshman there and it has been my dream school forever
How likely is it that not hearing back is a good thing?
