University of Michigan Deferred Applicants Class of 2022

My S got denied last night off the deferred EA list last night, but they didn’t even send out an email after all this time. 4 from his class got in - two double legacy, and two female athletes. S had 35 ACT, 1540 SAT,9 APS, 4.2 GPA, athlete, editor. Top 5 public schools in PA. He doesn’t fill a quota. Just think its unethical for them to have kids find out only by checking the portal that after waiting patiently for so long that they are denied. Standards for OOS are high but not for the athletes – and legacy counts for a lot. Boston College it is!!

@Birdy50 emails typically come later. Other threads are saying emails are coming out now.

Legacy does not mean nearly as much as you would like to believe. You only have to read the posts to see that it is very unimportant.

@onward2018 Legacy does indeed provide a boost for OOS applicants to Michigan. Michigan is one of those schools who values the connection between OOS applicants and the University. These applicants typically fit within the mid 50% range and who apply EA, write good essays showing they are a good fit and who express interest by visiting the school and/or getting in touch with the local regional admissons counselor for the area where their high school is located, and attend local receptions or high school visits from the regional admissons rep. My two kids are legacies who got accepted. And through the connectedness of social media and “real life” I know literally upwards of 100 kids (of friends, acquaintances, high school and college classmates, kids classmates) in recent years who got in and are legacies. Of course, getting accepted does not mean any boost in need-based or merit taid.

And I would argue that it is primarily because they “write good essays showing they are a good fit and express interest by visiting the school and/or getting in touch with the local regional admissions counselor for the area where their high school is located, and attend local receptions or high school visits from the regional admissons rep” that they are accepted, and rightfully so. Essays, interest (points of contact), and overall stats are the determining factors for acceptance. While legacy helps, it certainly doesn’t guarantee admission, as clearly evidenced on this thread. And, I will add that I also know “literally upwards of 100 kids” who did not get in and are, in virtually all cases, extremely qualified legacies (both in-state and OOS), many who have parents that are significant donors to the university. In fact, I feel very strongly that UM waitlists most, if not all, legacies in an effort to not alienate its alumni base.

When would the next wave of decisions be if you haven’t heard yet?

I checked my descision at noon and I checked it just now and it’s gone. Does anyone know why?

it’s possible you’re finding out tonight @bp295

@Michiganplz18 i already saw my decision (I got waitlisted) but when I checked it again, the decision was gone.

@bp295 that’s how it is for everyone that accepted the spot

***Edit: In fact, I feel very strongly that for those legacies not accepted, that UM waitlists most and rejects very few in an effort to not alienate its alumni base.

Who else is staying up until midnight waiting for wolverine access to update with a decision ?

I am @BorntobeatUofM

Waitlisted OOS
Chemical Engineering major
4.0 GPA
34 ACT
(funny thing is I was accepted into UC Berkeley and Georgia Tech which are ranked way higher for engineering so oh well Mich your loss)

Has anyone who was accepted not gotten an email yet?

@collegebound1212 what were your stats?

Did anybody get a decision?

I didn’t

DD received email confirmation tonight. Checked portal on finance aid, big fat 0 award. Anyone else checked? just wonder if this is the completed offer. If it is there’s no way to put $265k (four years) going M.

@netopspin What is your EFC? What did the net price calculator tell you?
