University of Michigan Deferred Applicants Class of 2022

D waitlisted. In state. Devastated.

I cannot imagine the devastation of instate folks that grew up wanting to go to UM being deferred then waitlisted. It is a double slap in the face and quite cowardly of their admissions department. Why reject someone when you can STRING THEM ALONG WITH A UNREALISTIC SLIVER OF HOPE I looked through a lot of colleges and UM may be the only one of its size or reputation to not simply reject the majority of EA applications and defer only those with a realistic shot. It makes no sense to hold on to tens of thousands of rejections for months past the EA announcement. It is CRUELTY to prolong the agony by offering what looks like a plethora of waitlist offers. I guess @billcsho had it right when he said their concern was with the accepted and not the rest.

The reason they don’t reject EA applicants is because they have not even looked at most of the applications. That’s why those applicants are deferred. At Michigan, deferred does NOT necessarily mean “we looked at your app and are on the fence so we’ll decide later.”

Waitlisted… Idk what to do

Spent all this time waiting just to be placed on another waitlist. They’re tripping if they think I’m still interested after all this attrition

To judge by the length of this thread dedicated to UM deferred applicants for the 2022 Class – 218 friggin’ pages! – UM must be THE most popular college in the country. Harvard’s wait list thread is only 6 pages. It’s sad and disappointing to see all the angst and anger students who want(ed) to attend UM and what they are now going through. Michigan residents and/or UM legacies are particularly upset, which I can understand to a degree, but from the outside looking in, just seems out sized to me. This is akin to the anguish Japanese kids go through trying to get into the University of Tokyo, and in many of those cases it gets even worse than what I’m seeing in this thread (without going into detail). My hope is that students and their get over this, find another good (or even decent) college, forget about all this and move on with their lives. UM’s a very good school, but it’s not worth all this. There are plenty of just as fulfilling collegiate experiences awaiting kids out there still. The stories students and their parents are sharing in this thread, though often interesting, can’t be healthy psychologically.

@Quincy4 I think people are expressing their disappointment, as I did for my daughter, in an environment where others understand. I was in the same situation with my middle child, now a junior at Michigan. He did not get into his first choice and was devastated. He committed to Michigan with the attitude “I am going to have an amazing time here,” and he is. A college rep from his first (waitlisted) choice stated, you will wind up where you belong. I am having faith in this for my daughter. We will move on and embrace choice 2 university. She will have a great time there and do amazing things.

All of you waitlisted or rejected from Michigan will go on to do amazing things wherever you wind up! Best of luck! Hold your head up and embrace your experiences.

@scraphappy I understand what you are saying, but I’m seeing some pretty strong statements … even you used the term “devastated” because your D was wait listed. Disappointed, even very disappointed, OK, but devastated? I’m just sayin’ … Anyway I’m sure she, and others, will move on to fine schools, careers and happiness and I hope the best for them.

@Quincy4 people need time to mourn. They have images of what their college experience may be. Michigan creates strong feelings with people, including us, die hard fans of the other big university in the state.

i called the university (hadn’t received a decision yet). they just said they were still looking at my application and hoped to get it out by early april. Everyone else from my school (in state) has heard. Is this a good or bad sign for me? Surely they would have just rejected me with the last wave if they were going to do so.

@scraphappy I totally agree with your post. If you work hard, you will do great in college and then in life regardless of whether it was your first choice. My problem with Michigan is that their process holds out hope for too long for folks that would be MUCH BETTER SERVED with being able to move on.

@JohnGaltIII I personally think Michigan was overwhelmed this year. Just a guess - I have no way of knowing for sure. Michigan is staying within the timeline they established. The college acceptance process is long, arduous and stressful. I think part of the problem is many people assume that Michigan is a safety for them. They are not. I’ve watched Michigan become increasingly more selective.

Michigan received over 70,000 applications thus year! UCLA was number one with just about 113,000. I think the reason this thread is so long is because Michigan does do early action and accepts/defers kids in December. While it seems like a “double slap in the face” would you have preferred to just be waitlisted now instead of hearing back in December? This was your final decision and I’m sorry it took them so long to figure it out but I do believe they weren’t bad expecting this many apps. College is what you make it so you will THRIVE anywhere you end up!! Best of luck to everyone on their journey!!

I also have not gotten an email or update on my wolverine access. Hopefully our wait will end soon!

so if we have not gotten a new decision yet, when could we expect to get one?

@JohnGaltIII valid point… but Harvard deferred like 4,000 ish people and only rejected about 700…

To all you rejected/wait listed folks – just remember Michigan sucks big time. Go to IU, The OSU, Wis., heck even Iowa. Don’t give the bastages another cent.

@yourmomma … or MSU.

hey guys just got accepted oos for LSA. I was wondering if I would still get any financial aid at this point?

It’s interesting that they don’t look at specific majors for their yield. My S is llooking to major in chemical engineering and got into Wisconsin & Minnesota. Both are ranked higher than Michigan stateside and globally for this major. Everything happens for a reason and with the large scholarship that Minnesota has offered, we say “Go Gophers!” You all will be happy wherever you attend!
