University of Michigan Early Action Class of 2019 Discussion

For those who got accepted, where is the University of Michigan Class of 2019 Facebook page?

If it makes anyone feel better, when I got a response from my regional counselor after my continued interest email it was just the automated-type one, but it also said, and I quote “so your recalculated GPA and ACT score below the 50th percentile made you a less competitive applicant, even with the strong leadership you have shown.” And also “as I said, admissions to the university of Michigan is the most competitive it has ever been. Although I encourage you to keep the University of Michigan as an option, I recommend that you also explore the other opportunities available to you.” Anyone else get anything rather discouraging? I know he was being honest, and he also said some very nice things I didn’t mention, but it’s still a little discouraging to hear. But I refuse to give up hope until mid-April.

Wow shots fired…

I had the “explore other opportunities available” part but not the “less competitive applicant” and got in

Here is what my D2 got…IMHO while I found this somewhat discouraging, it was not as discouraging as what you got.

"The University received a record breaking 27,000 early action applications this year, so admission was very competitive and we were not able to admit all of the qualified applicants who applied, only the most competitive. Be assured that we use a holistic and comprehensive review process and we looked at all aspects of your application before a decision was made & we considered your grades, curriculum, test scores, essays, and extra-curricular involvement as part of our evaluation. If you have already sent in mid-year grades, there is nothing further we need from you at this time. As stated in your deferral letter, we will have a final admissions decision for you in early April.

Before we can make a final decision on your application we need to further evaluate the strength of the regular decision applicants, as well as the yield rate of our admitted students to determine if we have space for you in the freshman class. Again, admission to the University of Michigan is the most competitive it has ever been this year, so although you are still a strong candidate for consideration, I would encourage you to keep the University of Michigan as an option, but also explore the other opportunities available to you. Please feel free to contact me if you have any additional questions or concerns."

One additional note on my previous post…“the final admissions decision for you in early April” part was the most discouraging, as I thought RD decisions were required by April 1st.

But on the bright side, she has several other options that are just as attractive educationally, and by far more attractive financially!! If Michigan doesn’t accept her by April 1st, I think she will have no choice but to go elsewhere.

wow those emails are depressing. i’m almost thankful that my continued interest message didn’t get a response.

@adkdad - I got exactly the same response you did and got in last Friday. I, too, found it discouraging, but I don’t think that you should read it that way, given my experience. I think UM is just hedging its bets; I would focus in on the “strong candidate” part.

@adkdad‌ my S got the same exact response email from our local rep. Very discouraging. What’s even more upsetting is that I have seen acceptances on here with lower or same stats as my S with no SAT IIs and no APs which my S had great scores on and I’ve seen no leadership or ECs accepted. I can say this, this entire process is very frustrating and with the exception of the students who have posted their outstanding stats and ECs who clearly deserved acceptance to UMich (not saying my S doesn’t) the process makes no sense.

Mine never replied, I was considering sending a second one, and I got in before I got to it

OK, what do you guys make of this deferral letter my daughter got back in December? It’s different than the others…

Thank you for your application to the University of Michigan College of Literature, Science, and the Arts for Fall 2015. We are pleased that you have applied and are impressed with your achievements. However, our high application volume, coupled with the very strong credentials of our applicants in recent years, has contributed to an increasingly competitive admissions process. As a result, we are writing to inform you that your application is currently being deferred for further review.

While this is not the answer that you were hoping to hear, your application remains under consideration. All final admissions decisions of admit, deny, or waitlist will be made no later than early April, 2015.

Strong fall semester or trimester grades may improve your status in the deferred pool of applicants. Therefore, please ask your high school counselor to forward them when they become available. Beyond that, we are confident that the information you have given us is more than sufficient for a final decision. The most successful candidates send us only what we require. Please refer to the website https://umich.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/2080 for FAQ’s about the admission process and what to do next.

We hope your interest in Michigan continues. You have our best wishes for an enjoyable and successful end of your senior year.

That’s the same one I got.

The response to my interest letter was slightly different than the above ones:

“The University received a record breaking 27,000 early action applications this year, so admission was very competitive and we were not able to admit all of the academically excellent students who applied. At the University of Michigan we use a holistic and comprehensive review process that looks beyond a student’s GPA and test score. We are also assessing their curriculum, extra-curricular involvement, leadership & awards, personal characteristics, and essays. Additionally, we gauge the level of interest the applicant demonstrates in the University, as well as their fit within our campus community.”

“Again, admission to the University of Michigan is the most competitive it has ever been this year, so although you are still a strong candidate for consideration, I would encourage you to keep the University of Michigan as an option, but also explore the other opportunities available to you. Please feel free to contact me if you have any additional questions or concerns.”

Idk it doesn’t seem too bright but it doesn’t seem too demotivating either

Keep calm and go blue!

i wish you all the best of luck.

don’t freak out umich is not the end of the world and getting worried won’t get you a decision

just focus on your current courses

expect the best and be prepared for the worst

Decisions are not due for RD or EA by April 1. My daughter applied EA a couple of years ago and didn’t hear the final answer until “early April”–maybe April 6th. Everyone should know by mid April.

@ackack did you get your acceptance before or after they received your midyears? My daughter’s school still hasn’t compiled them so they won’t be going out for another week or so.

@collegemomjam‌
I got my decision last Friday and my school still hasn’t sent my midyear grades. Also i just got a generic deferral letter, sent a short letter of interest, and got a generic response.

@collegemomjam‌ I also got acceptance before my midyears were sent. I’m not even sending my mid year now. They will just have to look at my final transcript.

@nagintapls did you also send a letter of interest after your deferral?

@collegemomjam My midyear has not been logged in at other schools, so I assume before. I think it depends which deferral letter you got – the one specifically indicating they wanted midyear grades or the one saying midyear grades would be helpful, etc.
