Hmm, well I think ECs that connect to your interests can certainly help, but I got into LSA as a three-season athlete who did not have ECs that demonstrably connected to Philosophy, my intended major. I don’t think that any of us has all pieces of the puzzle here, and it probably isn’t a good idea to tell someone that his/her application package is deficient …
Being a student athlete demonstrates qualities that would be attractive for any major. Time management skills, perserverence, quick thinking under pressure, ability to handle adversity, teamwork skills (depending upon the sport), ability to deal with all sorts of people in all kinds of situations, a commitment to healthiness, etc. This is why colleges AND EMPLOYERS value athletes so much.
That was my point. Telling someone there are deficient doesn’t make sense unless you know the whole picture. That student said he had ECs in sports and other things, as well. My son’s ECs in sports were a strong positive for him, just as if he had worked a 20 hour a week job.
If i participated in a sport all through high school, mentioned it in my application, but never elaborated more than that, do you think that will make my application more diverse because I didn’t touch on everything I have to offer? This is a very specific question I realize. Also, thoughts on sending a letter of continued interest if I applied early in RD?
It’s a black box. Sorry, @uofmPlease, but none of us know any better than you do.
I was deferred and then accepted? How does that even work for EA?
@kiwigirl18 When did you hear?
Doesn’t matter. At least you were accepted!
kiwigirl…that’s exactly how EA works. I don’t understand your question.
@HopefulWolverine I found out about two days ago
@adkdad I just didn’t think that I would get accepted so early after I was deferred lol
@fdizzle haha true. Its one less thing to worry about I guess
@kiwigirl18 will you attend ?
You only apply for Engineering Honors college after your first year at Mich right?
@meriks tbh I don’t know yet. The price of attendance for out of staters is quite steep and I applied to some other schools RD. I would absolutely love to go to UM though.
@Prospect1 @ackack I’m not disputing that sports isn’t useful and stuff. It’s definitely very very beneficial to your application and for life in general. But EC’s with regards to your major definitely help as much, if not more. Say if you’re applying as a CS major, participating in a few hackatons and making your own app is probably more impactful than say, lettering in basketball simply because you want to major in CS. If you’re applying for an CS internship, employers probably care more if you wrote some code for the solar car team rather than if you played varsity basketball at Michigan. On the flip side, if you’re applying as a kinesiology major, the admin office probably cares more about your involvement in sports rather than your involvement in CS. Js
@kiwigirl18 did you hear not on a friday?
I sent my semester grades in about a week ago (week ago
) so should that show up on my wolverine access just like my HS transcript did when I first applied?
@cnwu15 They probably had the news since Friday but I checked my student account on a Saturday
@class0f15 my counselor sent mine in yesterday. On common app it says it was downloaded (yesterday it just said it was sent) but I don’t see it on WA either.
anyone get anything pertaining to ross pa? like, an email confirming their receiving of your application.
