University of Michigan Early Action Class of 2019 Discussion

My older son, currently a Junior at Michigan, didn’t receive his acceptance until early April. My younger son was deferred in December and is waiting like everyone on this thread. As frustrating as the wait was, it was still worth it to be accepted, even if it was the last wave!

Did your older son apply EA?

Do deferred applicants and regular decision applicants often hear back at the same time?

If you are deferred, you will be considered for RD. As the RD admission is rolling, there is no specific time line for decision until the deadline.

Is it possible for some decisions to come out tomorrow?

for those of us who got defered initially and then accepted; our acceptance package has arrived

To everyone initially deferred and still waiting: I sent a letter of interest through email right after the holidays (the U was open when I sent it) and did not hear back. Having read this thread and seeing many people get accepted who had sent letters and had received a response I followed up this morning in the online chat Michigan has. The rep said that my letter was NOT in my file, and asked for my ID info, who I had sent it to etc. Eventually, she said I should call my regional adcom, and when I did her secretary picked up and suggested I resend it and that she would notify my counselor to be on the lookout as she receives many emails and that she would note it in my file. If I had not done this it easily could have been overlooked and I may have ended up on the waitlist, which I am sure will be heavily used this year.

Long story short: Letters of interest matter, I would suggest following up if you did not receive a response.

@saltydog97‌ the same exact thing happened to me! I emailed her during the holidays, waited a month, received no confirmation. I then contacted admissions, they told me it wasn’t on my file. It’s ridiculous what happened and I agree, if I didn’t check and make sure, that may have been the thing that made me wait listed.

@saltydog97‌ I sent another right after to the ecredentials email and I checked back within a week and they finally had it in my file.

@saltydog97 and @class0f15 . I received an email reply on the following day. Do you think, my email would be in my file? Or do you think, I should send one more? I sent only an email. Should I send a paper copy too?

@class0f15 what is the ecredentials email?

@cheemu‌ if they replied then i’m assuming it was put on your file so there is no need to email again

@saltydog97‌ ecredentials.umich.edu or something like that. it’s the email you send extra materials to

Does a reco from an alum help to a great extent ??

@cheemu‌ i’m assuming no, because i had an alum write my initial letter of rec and i got deferred! lol

Could you guys elaborate a little more on what you mean by “letter of interest”? We were told that U Mich, as many of the states schools claim, does not use demonstrated interest as part of the equation. Are you getting specific information from admissions or any other credible source that these letters are actually helping or might you have been accepted anyway?

Check out the common data set for Michigan. The University indicates that “applicant’s level of interest” is considered in admissions decisions.

@collegemomjam On the UMich Admissions tumblr, someone asked if they could send a “letter of burning desire” to the school after being deferred, and they replied with a link to contact their regional counselor. Seeing that they didn’t really discourage it in any way, doesn’t really hurt to send one (plus my counselor replied and said it would be noted on my app)

It says on Michigan’s admissions website “Do not submit any extra documents unless specifically requested, as this may only delay your decision”. Do you think sending information to either ecredentials or your adcom that wasn’t available during the time of application submission could still be beneficial?

@college53 I would say if it is meaningful and not redundant it can’t hurt.

Would a letter of interest count as an “extra document” and are they saying they really don’t want those?
