University of Michigan Early Action Class of 2019 Discussion

@collegemomjam‌ that is where it is vague. The quote of not wanting extra documents is from the application requirements. I am not sure

Does Anyone know anything about the Living Arts program and how it is?

Does everyone get invited to apply for living arts?

@mtjade‌ Yeah, I think so.

@mtjade‌

Yes. It is an automated email to all admitted students.

Went to Campus Day for LSA yesterday with my son. They said the accepted EA students were the strongest group ever, and the deferred also the strongest group ever. The average gpa of accepted (I believe they pulled from just accepted) was 3.9.

Someone told me yesterday that they couldn’t get through all of the EA apps and literally just deferred some people without even looking at apps because they couldn’t get through them all. Not sure if that’s true but this person was adamant that this is what happened.

I heard the same thing from the earlier Campus Day. It sounded like they were going to be managing admits tightly, which ties into earlier comments about not over-enrolling this year.

collegemomjam, the admissions office has 25 people working around the clock to make sure that 100% of applications that are completed on time are reviewed in time.

@Alexandre – are the decisions regarding LSA Honors rolling, in your experience, or should we expect that we’ll hear nothing before the 3/19 date? Thanks.

I don’t know for sure but I don’t think LSA honors decisions are rolling. Basically I just know that my son received his acceptance last year on the date they said they were going to be released.

Thanks for the reply, @2135ar , and congratulations to your son.

Admissions rep told a group of accepted students yesterday that they can’t “slip up” their last semester. They do check final grades.

Extracurricular- DECA, big family, allowed me to put learning into practice
Community- Marching Band, passionate and leadership skills
Why UMich- Likened UMich to a magnet attracting high quality students, talked about the different sections of campus like how a magnet has a north and south pole.

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details): Can’t rate.

Teacher Rec #1: Math teacher, loved me, he taught basic skills and let us figure the advanced concepts out, many students struggled with applying skills while I was able to thrive.
Teacher Rec #2: English teacher, had him freshman and junior year, got a B+ in junior year but saw me grow tremendously from freshman year to junior year and during junior year. A regional rep from another school told me this was an AMAZING rec.
Counselor Rec: Great, not generic. She wrote mine over the summer and didn’t start any of the other students until school began in fall.
Additional Rec: Business teacher, economics and marketing, talked about DECA accomplishments and how I was unique in my choice of combining business and engineering.

Other

State (if domestic applicant): NJ
School Type: Top 10 public school in NJ, rich towns
Ethnicity:Asian (Taiwanese)
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: Under $20,000 (it’s tough)
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Nonee

Reflection

Strengths: SATs, Recs, Essays, ECs
Weaknesses: Freshman-Junior Schedule (many of my toughest courses are in senior year and many of my heavy STEM classes are senior year)
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Took a lot of business elective Freshman-Junior, didn’t really heavily load in STEM until senior year. I guess I showed passion and my senior year courses/grades helped!!!
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Accepted Michigan State Honors College, Rejected UPenn M&T and Wharton

General Comments:

(Original Comments) I have all As in senior year. Along with three A+'s in APCS, AP Physics C, and AP Stats while many students are struggling in Physics and Stats, so I think I still have a shot.

They actually made a decision before first semester grades, sooo… whatever! Now, the campaigning for Ross Pre-Admit, my parents said I can’t really go unless I get in for Ross pre-admit (money probs), so gonna keep the updated with my DECA competitions, states is actually this weekend… I’m so excited that I got in!!! GO BLUE!

Congrats @futuregoogler with those stats I’m shocked you were deferred! When did you find out you got in?

Also, I submitted my first trimester grades January 2nd, the day I returned from holiday break. They were an A- in Calc, B+ in AP Lit, and all others were A’s.

What do you think my chances are? I’m so anxious to hear back and I would enroll in a heartbeat if accepted because I’ve been dreaming of going to UM for almost forever.

Are we hopeful that more decisions will come Friday?

@apple97 I’ve heard before the 28th, so maybe the 27th or just early March.

I read somewhere at there were over 27,000 applicants for Class of 2019’s EA alone. It is quite possible that the AO deferred without looking at some of them, so stay positive and hope for the best!

I was told by a source that U of M is bringing a record number of international and out of state students this year. So those of us in state may have a more difficult time. My daughter was deferred. Unfortunately legacy doesn’t play into the decisions. Her father played football for BO, and her brother is a Junior at U of M. Her credentials are better than what my sons were when he was accepted. I feel like it’s in the good Lords hands. We keep praying! The not knowing is stressful for all the kids. Just keep good thoughts, and plan B’s
