University of Michigan Early Action Class of 2019 Discussion

Did U-Mich definitely read all of our EA applications? Is it a rumor that they don’t get through all the apps and just defer the ones they don’t read?

Accepted OOS. 35 ACT and 4.0 UW GPA

@JK0919‌
You keep asking and nobody answer you because your question doesnt make much sense. Im pretty sure there is only ONE deferral letter. If you ask what the difference is between them, implying there are multiple, people are going to ignore your question because they do not know the answer.

super relieved, and good luck to everyone else out there. I wish you all nothing but the best!

@ryanryanryan A user before mentioned that there are two letters. If someone has a deferral letter that is different from the one already posted, please share it.

…

@ryanryanryan‌ The reason why I keep asking is because someone in this thread earlier put something like there are two kinds of dererral letters. I just wanna make sure if it is the right case or not. I do not know if you are accepted or deferred but for those who are deferred at this moment, even a simply clue could be vital. I wish you understand why I am kind of desperate.

@JK0919 There are 2 letters and every year people endlessly debate what they mean. If you search previous years’ email threads you will see. General consensus is they don’t result in any different end results.

If I get rejected, I’m appealing. How does this sound? This is a repost, btw.

Dear Umich admissions,

Thank you for your letter of rejection. After careful consideration, I regret to inform you that I am unable to accept your refusal to offer me admission to the Class of 2019.

This year I have been lucky enough to have received a record number of rejection letters from countless Universities. With such a promising array of opportunities available at such institutions, it is, unfortunately, impossible for me to accept all refusals.

Despite Harvard’s outstanding academic qualifications and extensive experience rejecting as many qualified applicants as possible, I find that that your particular rejection does not meet my standards at this time. As such, I will be offering myself admission to your institution. I look forward to spending our next four years together.

Best of luck in rejecting future applicants.

Sincerely,

Fri612

@96blue‌ sounds cruel. haha. I just wish to know anything that I can do right now to make my deferral into acceptance…

Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: My academics and summer activities/extracurriculars
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Deferred UChicago & Accepted MSU

General Comments:
Good luck to everyone! To those who were deferred: Keep your head up! I have many friends from last year who were amazing and got accepted a month later. U-M deferred so many this year so stay positive!

My friend got into Princeton and didn’t get in… What are they doing.

did this happen last year, too? this is crazy

Sucks being deferred with a 33 ACT and 4.0 GPA OOS for CoE, I’m not even overqualified like most of you that got deferred.

Deferred OOS LSA applicant with 2330, top 5%, 3-season athlete (not recruit). General observation: UM seems intent on shaking off “Ivy Safety School” rep. This is a small sampling, but based on this anecdotal info, they were all about that yield. In-state applicants = predictable. That makes sense. You guys will all absolutely consider UM given the tuition, and some of you will choose it over Harvard. Out-of-state applicants = the wild west. CoE people seem to have fared better than LSA. Legacies seem to have gotten in if qualified. Makes sense. You will definitely consider UM because of the connection. But general observation is that if OOS applicants were TOO seemingly qualified, they got deferred. Seems to have happened again and again this afternoon.

What will this do? Make RD insane for all schools. Hunger Games.

Given the “don’t send us anything but your grades” gestalt in Erica’s letter, how are we to convince UM between now and late January that we are legit candidates who will honestly consider the school? Clearly, the mid-summer visit to Ann Arbor was not enough, nor was the super-highly-detailed “Why Michigan” essay. Thoughts?
