Subjective :
I’m not going to get into details, but i have lots of EC’s and leadership positions. A lot of them and also a very wide variety. Also i think that my ECs are unique.
Essays (rating 1-10, details): if 10 is the type that brings tears to your eyes, probably 8-9/10
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details): I think they were pretty good, both my counsellor and physics teacher liked me and i had a very good relation with them.

Teacher Rec #1: 9/10
Counselor Rec: 9/10
Additional Rec: I had got a recommendation from a coach, i think it should’ve been pretty good.

Country (if international applicant): India
School Type: Private
Ethnicity: Asian
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: >$200,000
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): My dad went to Umich for an advanced management program, i don’t know if that helped or not.

Strengths: EC’s, Essays and Recommendations probably. I’m pretty sure this is what pulled me through.
Weaknesses: SAT and GPA were low for Umich.
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: To compensate for my GPA and SAT i had spent a lot of time on my application and essays, also i think my ECs really helped.
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Accepted to - Illinois institute of tech, Colorado Boulder.

General Comments: Absolutely Thrilled. This is unreal. Never expected it, definitely going to attend Umich. Congratulations to everyone else who was admitted and good luck to those awaiting their decision !!

@ss124081‌ When did you get the email??

I got it 2 hours ago ! @jakerzz97‌

Im guessing i won’t be hearing tonight :frowning: Ugh so nervewracking

@zebrak1ngfish so selfish that u didn’t withdraw it for people who actually want to go to this schoool

@Violet4 I am in the same position as you. It is completely optional to send in first semester grades, but they highly recommend it if you think it will help enhance your application. I’m definitely going to submit mine. :)

UM has a clever strategy. Clearly, they didn’t weed out the ED-accepted kids who notified them this week and attempted to pull their applications. But I don’t believe ED-accepted kids were required to pull applications at this point, anyway. UM probably just made a super-duper pile and deferred most of the super-duper applicants (I have definitely seen some exceptions, and can’t account for them in this theory unless they were URM, recruited athletes, or first gen) (also, this is an LSA theory only). My understanding is that ED folks have to commit and pull in mid-January, if they haven’t done so already. Soooo, UM’s super-duper pile gets decidedly smaller in January. UM has communicated, “hey, deferred people, we don’t want more stuff from you.” My hunch is that at this point, they accept everyone in the pile who has demonstrated a scintilla of interest and completed a good-faith, detailed “Why Michigan” essay. Why is this a good strategy for UM? [1] Being EA and public means they can attract top applicants, including those from HYPS; [2] waiting on these applicants until the pile is smaller means they don’t have to squander acceptances on those people who definitely aren’t coming; [3] thus, they can keep their yield as high as possible; [4] which, in turn, keeps US News stats up. It’s ALL about US News.

If my family’s income bracket is <$30,000, would this increase or decrease my chances of getting in?

My thinking is either Increase because of diversity/what-not
Decrease because OOS and they would either need to supply a lot of aid or I wouldn’t attend/fill up slots.

This is the other letter:
Thank you for your freshman application to the University of Michigan. And it is from Michigan admissions, not Sanders

Do you think if i call they can tell me my admissions status?

[/noparse]

what does the two deferred letters mean? I got the other one…

rejected ED from johns hopkins last friday and now deferred today!!! college sux!!!

To all of you that are upset- deferral does not mean no.

To those of you who are criticizing those whom you perceive as having lower credentials than you- remember, this is a school that admits holistically, using 6 points of information, with GPA and course rigor as the twin top points.

Many of you who are deferred will be admitted. Patience is hard. This is a disappointing day, for sure.

But try and keep it all in perspective. You will end up where you are meant to be, and for many of you, that be Michigan.

Good luck to all.

What surprises me is that so many are surprised as being deferred. Michigan is a reach for 100% of OOS applicants. Even 4.0 students with 2400/36 on the SAT and ACT should consider Michigan a reach. It may not be as hard to get into as Harvard or Caltech, but it is as hard to get into as most other elite universities…for OOS and International applicants. In-State students face much better odds.

On a more positive note, many of those who were deferred will be admitted. EA is not the same as ED. Acceptance rates for EA are not higher than acceptance rate for RD since it is non-binding.

This makes RD so much more competitive I feel, I mean I’m deferred with a 30 ACT but how do I compete with these people who were deferred with 32+??? And also one has to consider the other RD applicants and at this point I feel like getting in to UMich is impossible for me. Such a shame since it’s my 1st choice and I am absolutely in love with it.
