University of Michigan Early Action Class of 2019 Discussion

Can anyone tell me which deferral letter I got (best, worst, other)?

Dear _____:

Thank you for your application to the University of Michigan College of Literature, Science, and the Arts for Fall 2015. We are pleased that you have applied and are impressed with your achievements. However, our high application volume, coupled with the very strong credentials of our applicants in recent years, has contributed to an increasingly competitive admissions process. As a result, we are writing to inform you that your application is currently being deferred for further review.

While this is not the answer that you were hoping to hear, your application remains under consideration. All final admissions decisions of admit, deny, or waitlist will be made no later than early April, 2015.

Strong fall semester or trimester grades may improve your status in the deferred pool of applicants. Therefore, please ask your high school counselor to forward them when they become available. Beyond that, we are confident that the information you have given us is more than sufficient for a final decision. The most successful candidates send us only what we require. Please refer to the website https://umich.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/2080</a> for FAQ’s about the admission process and what to do next.

We hope your interest in Michigan continues. You have our best wishes for an enjoyable and successful end of your senior year.

Sincerely,

Erica L. Sanders
Interim Director

@yikesyikesyikes‌ That is the “good” one, but it doesn’t seem like there’s very many of the other one, so take it with a grain of salt

Thanks! I just wish I knew how many defers they accept in the RD round.

When do you think the next wave of results will come out? I Still haven’t heard.

I am so done with this. ACT 35 SAT 2290 all in one sitting. One of the best and most competitive schools in the country with honor roll, good extracurriculars, great recommendations, I think my essays were at least above average, not a minority but a unique background. Now because of this I need to add more for safeties, and I was hoping to not apply for any safeties regular decision if I got in here. I am actually very serious about UMich, but this yield protection is the most ridiculous thing.

congrats to all who got in.

If you mean, results on initial app, then all day today. If you mean, I was deferred, when could I possibly get news, then late January.

My friend’s daughter still hasn’t heard.

The decisions come out in batches through the evening…not necessarily based on geography. My older son is a Junior now at U of M. Three years ago, he was deferred in December and got his acceptance the first week of April…sorry for those who have to wait that long! He would say it was worth the wait - he absolutely loves Michigan! Younger son/brother is currently waiting his decision - he doesn’t have anything yet either. For those deferred, it helps to stay in touch with admissions, and notify them of any awards/honors/etc that occur between now and your final decision. For my older son, this definitely helped.

So i will definitely hear today? I am EA but i still haven’t heard.

Someone already asked this with no reply - how should we continue to show interest if they don’t want additional things? Michigan is 100% where I am meant to be and I need advice on how I can hopefully raise my chances in the regular applicant pool. Also, will they look at January SAT? I plan on retaking it.

I know 8 other kids in my school who applied to Michigan and we all have a pretty wide range of scores and extracurriculars. Every single one of us was deferred.

For some students, they want to see your grades from the semester that just ended, which aren’t available until January. My Junior son stayed in touch with admissions by emailing once a month. He did have some great honors/awards Jan- March - several writing awards, scholarship awards, state hockey championship, etc. Some of his greatest accomplishments occurred last semester senior year and ultimately they were enough to earn him admission.

Haha I’m just like your child…I have got 4 defers from wash u, case western reserve, umich, and northeastern…Now I’m totally lost with my application.

Accepted to the College of Engineering!

I probably got in due to coming from such an socio-economically disadvantaged region in Michigan (one of the worst high schools in Michigan with around 70% of students on free or reduced lunch), and I also stressed in the essays my extreme interest in robotics, engineering, and computer science, all coming from my involvement in FIRST Robotics (I’m the president of my team).

Congrats to those who got in! And those who got deferred, let’s wait patiently for further results.8-|
