University of Michigan Early Action Class of 2019 Discussion

If I have test scores not sent by 11/1, can I send more test scores now that I am deferred? Specifically one from November.

anyways to confirm your acceptance?

If i got deferred and got the first deferral letter, when do you think I will hear about my final decision?

Definitely

Essays (rating 1-10, details): Can’t rate
Common App- “The Internship”, how it inspired me to link business and engineering.
Extracurricular- DECA, big family, allowed me to put learning into practice
Community- Marching Band, passionate and leadership skills
Why UMich- Likened UMich to a magnet attracting high quality students, talked about the different sections of campus like how a magnet has a north and south pole.

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details): Can’t rate.

Teacher Rec #1: Math teacher, loved me, he taught basic skills and let us figure the advanced concepts out, many students struggled with applying skills while I was able to thrive.
Teacher Rec #2: English teacher, had him freshman and junior year, got a B+ in junior year but saw me grow tremendously from freshman year to junior year and during junior year.
Counselor Rec: Great, not generic. She wrote mine over the summer and didn’t start any of the other students until school began in fall.
Additional Rec: Business teacher, economics and marketing, talked about DECA accomplishments and how I was unique in my choice of combining business and engineering.

Other

State (if domestic applicant): NJ
School Type: Top 10 public school in NJ, rich towns
Ethnicity:Asian (Taiwanese)
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: Under $20,000 (it’s tough)

Reflection

Strengths: SATs, Recs, Essays, ECs
Weaknesses: Freshman-Junior Schedule (many of my toughest courses are in senior year and many of my heavy STEM classes are senior year)
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Took a lot of business elective Freshman-Junior, didn’t really heavily load in STEM until senior year.
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Michigan State Honors College, Rejected UPenn M&T and Wharton

General Comments: I have all As in senior year. Along with three A+'s in APCS, AP Physics C, and AP Stats while many students are struggling in Physics and Stats, so I think I still have a shot.

If i got deferred and got the first deferral letter, when do you think I will hear about my final decision?

Thanks for the info on this thread. Found this a few days ago and it was very accurate in predicting the release of decisions today.

Michigan is his dream school so he is relieved and excited.

@uofmPlease I have special stats since i’m an international student (French). I don’t have a GPA as you guys. I have a 2020 SAT, with 740 in maths. A 112/120 TOEFL. Waiting for SAT II’s. Applying for CoE. I have good EC’s i think, i’ve been in a Gap year and i’ve been working in a Children’s hospital in South America as volunteer for the past three months. I also have an internship at NASA san francisco coming up next month. I don’t think my SAT needs to be as high as others since i’m french (and also speak Dutch and Spanish) and my Math is decent, but still… 2300’s being defferred… I’m paying full tuition, if that matters at this point. I’m hoping my “special” profile might help me.

Where else you are applying or have already applied: Indiana (accepted) USC
General Comments/Advice/Hindsight: I think that Michigan wants to see that you really want to attend UMich, and are not just racking up acceptances for fun. I also think that building connections at the University is key. My advice to deferred students is to reach out to a professor in your desired major and talk to them about the programming. It’ll give you a better idea of the school, and may have profound repercussions up the ladder. Most importantly, be yourself. It is more important to talk about the one or two things that you are really passionate about than to have a laundry-list of activities you did just to add to your app. Lastly, keep your heads up. So many students are admitted after being deferred that everyone of you has a good shot of being admitted. Have a happy holidays and don’t focus just on this deferral!

I made an account after lurking because I thought I should contribute, haha.

Decision: Deferred

Essays (rating 1-10, details): 9; I think that my essays were pretty solid, but I think I didn’t show enough interest in Michigan in the supplemental essay.

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):

Teacher Rec #1: 10-Honors/AP Chem teacher/Club Moderator. I think she likes me and she tends to write good recs.
Teacher Rec #2: 10-World History/Econ/AP Gov teacher. She likes me a lot.
Counselor Rec: 8- I am less hopeful about her recommendation. She is a bit unorganized.

Other:

State (if domestic applicant): OOS, California
School Type: Private, Catholic
Ethnicity: Asian/White
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: I won’t qualify for any financial aid; let’s put it that way.
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): N/A

Reflection

Strengths: I think my job experience is pretty good.
Weaknesses: I had pretty bad (but not failing) grades my first semester of freshman year. Not sure how much my GPA lowered after recalculation.
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: GPA, possibly. AP and SAT II scores aren’t stellar. It seems that many people with similar stats are getting deferred.
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: EDIT READ THIS WRONG. Got accepted to UoA, UMN Twin-Cities, CSU East Bay(lol). No rejections or other defers yet.

General Comments: Good job to everyone who got in, and good luck to everyone deferred or applying RD! :)

Other:

State (if domestic applicant): OOS, California
School Type: Private, Catholic
Ethnicity: Asian
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: I won’t qualify for any financial aid; let’s put it that way.
Hooks: First Generation Student; College Visits (coming all the way from California)

Reflection

Strengths: Michigan was clearly my 1st Choice
Weaknesses: GPA, Test Scores
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: GPA, possibly. AP and SAT II scores aren’t stellar.
Where else were you accepted: University of Arizona, Fordham University

General Comments: U-M was my first choice, and I really wanted to get in. Glad they gave me a chance by deferring me. I actually thought I would be rejected based off of my low GPA and test scores. praying so hard

wtf deferred -_-

SAT: 2340, ACT 35, GPA 3.97, 800 Math II, 770 Chem, fuckton of AP’s, 4 years of cross country/track, event captain, loads of volunteering hours, etc etc.

Damn I actually wanted to go there too

@mem227 No, my acceptance letter stated I got into Arts and Sciences. The Ross decisions come out in March/April.

@scalia13 I got in with a 31 ACT Score.

This really isn’t true at all

Sure, you can say Michigan is a reach, but in reality, there is no possible way that this school (with around a 30% acceptance rate overall) would be able to deny all of these 35-36’s and 2300+'s and still have a more qualified entering freshman class. The school wants to protect its yield rate, and understands that the matriculation rate of the top students in the entire country just won’t be that high. These people aren’t getting deferred because Michigan is a reach and they aren’t qualified enough. These people are getting deferred because they’re TOO qualified.

Hey guys I just got Deferred from Michigan, but has anyone actually gotten rejected or do they not do that?
