I don’t think Michigan sent anything out. My son did not get anything and he was accepted to COE from Illinois. Although now that I think of it, he did receive that invitation to interview with a local alumnus. I wonder if that was a signal of sorts, although it came very early in the process so I don’t think so.

Has anyone received an acceptance from Kinesiology?? I haven’t seen any on this thread and am very curious.

Deferred OOS
3.90 unweighted gpa, 28 act
Other than my low test score, I truly believe I had a great application… biracial female with excellent essays, multiple leadership positions (captain of two sports)/extracurriculars, top-notch recs, balanced course rigor with emphasis on math/science classes.
I applied for the movement science major.

Along with sending in my first semester transcript, I am planning on trying out for the UM dance team in March if I still haven’t gotten a decision by then… I am pretty confident in my abilities and think I have a good shot at making it. Both admitted and deferred dancers are able to tryout.
Do you think that information is something worth sharing with admissions? Would it add to my strength in the regular decision pool?

My son was accepted EA OOS a few years ago, and we never got anything in the way of swag or greetings from Michigan before or after acceptance. Many other schools pile it on. We got car stickers, koozies, holiday cards, etc. from all across the country. Not one thing from UM. You’ll get attention from Michigan when you’re paying tuition. Don’t make any inferences from this, it will just make you crazy.

Just catching up on this thread. Shocked at some of the deferrals of super high stats kids. One thing I didn’t see mentioned much was ‘financial need’. Unfortunately, this is likely a component in the decision to defer some OOS applicants. Are there a lot of full pay OOS students that got deferred with 35/2300+ scores and high grades? I didn’t see ANY on this thread but many applicants didn’t mention finances at all.

Oh no, not going to make us crazy. It was just an observation I made and wondered if there might be anything to it. My other daughter is a third year at Ohio State and I don’t recall any swag or greetings from any of the schools during her time of applying and waiting. In fact, I remember the process being a lot different, not even a common app at the time.

What’s more mysterious than the mass deferrals is the logic behind acceptances. I’m seeing the stats of those accepted OOS all over the place. Did essays make a difference? At least as per stated priority, GPA, course rigor, and test scores were ahead of the essays. Anyone has any insight?

@YZamyatin did not request aid. 35 ACT, OOS, LSA, school DNR but in top 4 of graduating class of about 60. Weighted GPA 5.30/5. Deferred. Nobody from my school was accepted. It seems to me that the cut off for deferral (if they’re deferring overqualified applicants who they think will go elsewhere) is about a 30/31 as I haven’t seen many with an ACT lower than a 30 getting deferred.

ACT: 26
GPA: 4.0
1 AP class, 6 honors classes, 2 dual enrollment classes
Number 11/450ish in class
In state
Minority (African American)
First generation undergrad

I think that my essays are what got me in. I am also in New Tech though, which probably made me stand out a bit.

I’m worried because this took away much of my confidence for my regular decision schools. I’m even more unsure of my standing–which schools is within my reach–than I was before my early round. Sigh

SAT I: 2180: (Math: 790, CR: 650, Writing: 740) from one sitting
SAT II: Math 2: 770, Physics: 800

GPA (out of 4.0):
Unweighted: 3.84
Weighted: 4.08
Class rank: 9/85

International Student Male (South East Asia).
I should also mention that I have an older sibling studying there at the moment (@SMTD). Judging from all the deferrals, I am quite surprise I am accepted, not sure if this sibling factor thing helped me. Good luck to you all who are deferred, I hope the good news come soon!

Yeah, crazy! Why do you think you were deferred, if you had to guess? Was your UW GPA low? My son was sub 3.9 but very high rigor. His ACT was not much higher than your SAT (how could it be?).

Not to take anything away from you but there is selection bias in your post. With so many thousands of decisions, we can find a handful of examples for almost any combination of factors. My comments were based on observations of hundreds of posts made without solicitation of evidence for any particular combination of factors.

SAT: 2180 - Math: 710, Reading: 730, Writing: 740
SAT subject tests - Math 1: 730, U.S. History: 740
GPA 3.8/3.9 (unwieghted), 4.0 (weighted)
11 AP classes with many 5’s + lots of honors
Top 3% of high school class
OOS

Strengths: I had really good essays and impressive extracurriculars.
Weaknesses: SAT I think my essays really won them over. My extracurriculars were also impressive. So excited!!!
