University of Michigan Early Action Class of 2019 Discussion

@YZamyatin - can’t say why I was deferred except that I suspect that east coast LSA candidates with high stats may be set aside for consideration post ED pare-down. Just a theory, and I realize that there is paltry evidence at hand for theories in any direction. But my high school typically gets 50 kids in, and over the past three years, this theory seems to conform to data points. But we shall see.

And I am 4.56 weighted GPA, 10 AP classes, very high rigor in a highly competitive public school.

It sure seems like this year especially, UMich has deferred many qualified or even over-qualified applicants even though they are OOS.

Just to give my D’s stats since I saw mention of not many deferrals with sub 30 ACT scores.

Deferred.

OOS
Class Rank: Top 5% (currently 8/150, expected to go higher after this semester’s grades get released)
ACT score: 27
GPA: 4.0 (4.05 W, again, expected to change to higher after this semester’s grades get released)
AP classes include: Calculus, English Comp and Chemistry. Might be missing one or 2 in there. I can’t remember now.
Essays: Thought they were really well written with U of M’s essay her strongest one (matter of opinion, I guess)
EC activities: Varsity track and field letter winner with 2 years making it to state level competition. Stood the podium at state last season placing in 3 events. Named All State and Academic All State. Accomplished artist earning ribbons in various art shows including Best in Show.

Applied for engineering.
Accepted to Purdue, Ohio State and Case Western with Purdue being her top choice.

@mtjade‌

Extracurriculars: Spanish Honor Society president, president of another community-service school club, board member of two major citywide organizations, varsity cheerleader for 2 years, national honor society, and I attended the Yale Young Global Scholars program.

So, could be a geography thing. Their data might show that certain east coast high stat apps don’t enroll at the same rate as Midwest high stat apps. Might even have to do with your individual high school. None of us knows anything for certain.

Best of luck to you!

If I applied to the 2015 summer term instead of fall term, does anyone know when I’ll be hearing back? Technically it’s regular decision. But it would be crazy to hear back in April if I have to go to school a month and a half later.

Reflection

Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected:

General Comments:

Accepted today for LSA!
ACT: 27
GPA: 3.8
In state female, extensive leadership in all extracirriculars and some international experience, great essays that describe rather rough upbringing/socioeconomic status.
Didn’t report any AP scores.
Still kind of in shock lol

@SmileAlways15‌ I was accepted in state with comprehensive studies as well. My ACT was a 27, but I’m kind of confused as to why I was placed into this program lol. I’ve never seen myself as someone in need of academic help, as my GPA is a 3.8 with dual enrollment, AP classes, accelerated programs ect. I guess it doesn’t hurt to take avantage of it, but I know some students are required to do the Bridge program for the summer. Do you know if they notify you in your acceptance letter if you are required to do that?

General Comments/Advice/Hindsight: GO BLUE!!!
And hopefully I get pre-admit to Ross

@infante97‌
I was placed into this as well, and although my test scores are relatively low (27 ACT), my GPA is a 3.8; I’ve taken several APs, been in accelerated STEM programs, I’m dual enrolled and have even tested out of a few classes. I wrote my essays about my rough upbringing and socioeconomic situation, so I believe that that is why we were placed into this. (I am also a decent amount of Native American). I’ve been researching and I believe if you are in the Bridge program, you are notified in your acceptance letter. Otherwise, CSP students are not required to attend summer classes. Really CSP is just an optional resource, with the exception that we have specific academic advisors for our program. I was kind of insulted at first, especially with some of the things people say, but hey, at least we got accepted lol.

deferred w/ the so called “good letter.” (One signed by Erica with mentions of family ties). In state. 27 ACT w/ 3.75 unweighted gpa. Only 1 ap (very small school) but have dual-enroll courses from local community college and LOTS of ec. I mean A LOT. Just going to work my ass off the rest of my senior year and write a great “still strongly interested” email and we’ll see where that gets me! To all the deferred students, we’re deferred not defeated!! Don’t give up. (:

I could be wrong, but I am really sensing some “Tufts Syndrome” going on here…

I was deferred, and I’m actually really upset. I was accepted into the SMTD last week for dance because of my audition in Nov and wanted to pursue the dual degree program, but I got deferred from LSA today. Not to sound bratty, but I thought I has strong enough stats to be admitted. Very disappointed…

Got deferred- Out of curiosity, what is an Interim Director? I got my deferral letter from Erica L. Sanders, Interim Director.

I was deferred from LSA; however, I received the 2nd deferral letter that asks for senior year 1st semester grades. Am I one of the very few who got the second letter.
I have a 27 and a 3.5, with several APs at one of the nation’s best high schools.

Deferred…

Applied to which school/college: CoE

School Type: Large Public
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: over $200,000
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): 4th Generation. Great-grandfather, grandfather, and father all alumni.

Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I submitted my app on the 31st near the deadline. Maybe they didn’t get to read it. Maybe engineering is way tougher than LSA.

General Comments: My deferral letter was different than others. It specifically said,

“While we recognize this is not the answer that you were hoping to hear, perhaps particularly so because of your family ties with the University, your application remains under consideration.”

Is this because I would be a fourth generation Michigan student and my family donates a lot of money to the school every year? I don’t get how they don’t know it is my top school. I have been going to football games my whole life and attended numerous summer camps there. I thought I would easily get in. Is there a way to switch application to LSA for deferral review?

Accepted! 25 ACT, 3.68 GPA. LOTS of EC’s. National Honor Society, 3 sports a year for 4 years, from very rural area in upper michigan

How did you find your ratings for the essays/recommendations?
