University of Michigan Early Action Class of 2019 Discussion

Any word from anyone?

I chatted with a rep. today. They told me the first batch would be out in the next two weeks with the day/date yet to be determined.

I do not know how I would wait another two weeks

Nothing here and this is about the exact time I found out about my deferral.

I know they’re not always reliable but heres my most recent convo with a rep:

Bill Berger: Hi, my name is Bill Berger. How may I help you?
Me : Hi! I was deferred from the University during the early action period and was wondering when I might hear back?
Bill Berger: early March
Me: Great thanks! Is there any reason why a wave was released at this time last year?
Bill Berger: It is different every year
Me: I see, would it be safe to say that the first wave should be expected to come out around the first week of March?
Bill Berger: We hope so but we don’t know for sure just be patient
Me: Of course! One last question, do you think its possible that they will come out a little earlier than that?
Bill Berger: Not sure sorry
Me: Thanks anyways, have a nice day

I really don’t like the way Michigan seems to almost enjoy toying with kids. ( and my daughter got in EA so this is not out of bitterness). But the " we have no idea when admissions decisions will be out" is so disingenuous and anxiety producing. I was reminded in a thread that in a prior year Michigan’s Tumblr was all. " you students should not be so obsessed with Fridays. We don’t release on any particular day. Only to immediately thereafter release on the following Friday. There’s something kind of icky to me about all of this.

lol i applied on december 1st and was accepted on the 20th…

We should all keep in mind they have thousands of apps. It does take awhile to go through these. Also ww know they are being more careful this year to not admit quite so many students. They need to see who else is applying before answering every ea student. In state kids should have some priority, and there has been a push lately to complain about the number that do not get in.

“lol i applied on december 1st and was accepted on the 20th”

You don’t come across well repeatly pointing that out.

@berkvard if you’ve been accepted, why are you still hanging around this thread? Why not move onto the Accepted Stats thread?

I think it makes @berkvard feel better about his acceptance to UMich…if you read his other posts, you’ll see he has apps in to schools that are a lot more difficult to get into…I think his behavior is in unbecoming, thoughtless, and, frankly, shows a lack of empathy. If he does end up matriculating at Michigan, I would not want my student rooming with such an insensitive creep.

Last year they did not get through all the EA applications and they were very up front about saying that in December. I presume some of the late January acceptances were the result of finally getting through the EA applications which I believe was an anomaly. I don’t think Michigan has ever been disingenuous with students and have been consistent with telling kids the last date they will receive an answer. This year they are saying more or less what they have said in previous years - that after EA it is rolling admissions and - everyone will hear by mid-April – and deferred and RD decisions will be released in batches. it’s been this way for years and years after EA closes and RD begins except for that spurt of acceptances in January last year of EA apps they didn’t get through by Christmas.

@momofthreeboys‌ I find your posts to be very accurate and informative, but have to disagree with your first sentence here. Michigan has gone to great lengths to get through all EA applications this year, last year, and each year it’s been offered. Other than some isolated cases where application materials were received but overlooked, all applicants qualifying for EA have received decisions in December. I don’t recall them or anyone else ever stating otherwise.

@berkvard Rekt

Wolverine Access is not available right now…hmmm

Pretty sure they had planned maintenance for WA scheduled for this morning, they probably started the process early that’s all. @stahboy

Didn’t someone say a couple days ago that they called admissions and they said they would release first batch on Feb. 1st?

the deadline is Feb 1st, how on earth could they release anything on the day of deadline. The first should come around early march according to live chat.

@meriks‌ sorry, I meant to say first batch of deferred acceptances.

I received this from a counselor on Friday:

Dear __________,

Thank you for your continued interest in the University of Michigan . I understand that you may be disappointed upon learning that your application was deferred for further review.
The University received a record breaking 27,000 early action applications this year, so admission was very competitive and we were not able to admit all of the academically excellent students who applied. At the University of Michigan we use a holistic and comprehensive review process that looks beyond a student’s GPA and test score. We are also assessing their curriculum, extra-curricular involvement, leadership & awards, personal characteristics, and essays. Additionally, we gauge the level of interest the applicant demonstrates in the University, as well as their fit within our campus community.

Strong fall semester or second trimester grades may improve your status in the deferred pool, so be sure to have your high school counselor forward your grades once they become available. If you have improved test scores or new and compelling information it may also be sent to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions to be added to your application file. Additionally, I have noted your strong continued interest in the University of Michigan. We will have a final decision for your by early April.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any additional questions or concerns.

Best,
