My kid was an enthusiastic user of community college transfer credits as an OOS student at UMich. He’s transferred in the Econ 101/102 and several math classes to Michigan. Transfer credits also get you higher priority in class registration which can be a helpful in setting up your schedule. He’s a double major and really needed the extra schedule space.

The school is much tougher in AP credit acceptance than CC credit. And no registration priority for AP credit.

However, another University’s similar class can be submitted for credit review. A summer 2025 change is that online exams render classes ineligible for transfer credits. There’s a large online database of preapproved transfer credits. It’s very departmentally based. Some are granting a lot of credits, others are much stingier.

There was quite a pipeline of kids taking math classes at the Michigan CC. The math department is in the process of tightening standards but it’s not clear what the final changes will be in transfer credit.

The math major is very tough and focused on proofs. Transfer credits just don’t prepare you well for the proofs. Of course it’s a top 10 undergraduate math department with a friendly, social population—that works very hard.

These are different links even though they look similar

I have a question regarding score reporting. If your student submitted ACT or SAT through Common App is that all they need to do, or do they need to submit through the Michigan portal also? Michigan portal shows app is complete, but when she clicks on scores it shows her two test dates for her ACT superscore, but no scores. It does however show her AP scores. Just wondering if this is OK or if she needs to submit her ACT scores again directly to Michigan portal?

My kid’s portal has an ACT composite score listed (she did not super-score and there are no separate section scores listed). She definitely did not have to upload anything separately to the portal. I think she just self reported on the common app

Your fine. Michigan will take it from here. There is nothing more to do. Good luck.

Is it anticipated that the new dorm will increase this year’s acceptance rate?

I would think so but don’t think it would make a statistical difference at this point. They were planning to completely redo north years ago and build a high rise to accommodate more student’s. I think this will just ease the burden and give more choices for housing.

To my understanding, no. Per a talk given at a recent parents event, they’re trying to get to the point where they can guarantee all students two years of housing as opposed to only one now. The new beds coming on line will be a meaningful step in that direction (though they’ll still need thousands more).

I don’t think the new dorms are coming online fast enough. It’s a big problem that housing is so expensive. Many freshmen last year wanted dorms but couldn’t get them.

Something like 1/2 in 2026 and half the next year.

Don’t let the above “Financial Aid “Deadlines confuse you with the RD deadline of February 1st.

That’s been the story for a while it seems. They only guarantee housing for one year and there are very few beds beyond that (until more recently, and in the next year or two). It was probably our biggest trepidation about the school. That said, we’ve found the rents manageable as it turns out. One of our kids only pays $7xx/mo, the other a little over $1k. I think $1060 or something like that. Both are less expensive than their dorms last year.

There are of course ‘lux’ options at $2xxx/mo which is crazy.

We paid around $700-$900 depending. There are coop housing that are interesting as well. My son’s last year he did it and had a chef cooking the meals.

Tour planning question. Just starting to poke around at what we should see. We are doing the regular tour. My junior is interested in engineering, and I just noticed that engineering tours exist, but not on the day we will be there :frowning: . I have not found a self-guided tour for engineering - did I miss it?

I would call and ask but you would need a student with access to some buildings but not all. But
you can call engineering and ask if there is a student that can assist you. You can Facebook a student org or do what my son did at Michigan. Set up a meeting with the head of the department or professor to learn more about engineering there. This was an invaluable experience. He was between engineering and Actuarial Science.

Since we are talking about visiting Michigan and taking a tour or self guided tour the question I want to know in general is what do people want to get out of it? We found most guided tours honestly a waste of time. Why? Once you do a few of them they are all basically the same. You do a rah, rah yea this school talk. Some facts and figures that the parents go
Wow! You take the “walk” and for some reason always stop at the Chem lab to see which major company is sponsoring their lab. Yes, the first time it was cool and exciting but becomes the same after 1/2 of these.

My kid’s at different types of schools got a lot out of just walking the campus. Seeing if the vibe was good. Actually stopping a few student’s and asking “Why this school “. The answers were really great and all were very kind and got it.

You can again also reach out to students online. Sure some campuses are more this and that. Michigan central campus where classes are held, just isn’t that big.

We also got lunch on campus and just observed. Would this place and those kids be a comfortable place for you to attend. Different schools definitely give off different vibes. Is that the vibe you want?
