Hi, I am a high school student and I am interested in UMich. I am very curious to learn about the vibe of the school. Specifically, what differentiates UMich culture from other top schools?

P.S. I want to pursue a political science degree.

Keep in mind that Michigan has an insane number of student clubs…something like 1,200 different student “organizations”…if you can conceptualize it, you can find it at Michigan. It isn’t clear to me that the culture is a monoculture…there is a lot of stuff going on…the first challenge is, do you know yourself well enough to sample from the huge menu. The second challenge will be are you flexible enough to mutate and take advantage of all that there is to offer without compromising your grade point?

7th for graduating future politicians: http://www.lsa.umich.edu/lsa/aboutlsa
EVERY LSA PROGRAM IS AMONG THE BEST IN THE U.S.
More than 40 are among the top 10, and 5 programs are the best in their fields.
In 2012, U-M was ranked 18th among the best universities in the world by The Times of London
As the primary undergraduate college, LSA is the reason U.S. News & World Report ranks U-M as one of the top 10 universities for undergraduate teaching
The 2011 Newsweek college rankings placed U-M 7th among schools graduating future politicians, 15th among schools for computer geeks, 16th for top schools among CEOs, 24th among most desirable urban schools, and 25th among the most gay-friendly schools

Students here have an extreme amount of pride and school spirit, which is different than a lot of schools on the same academic level. They tend to skew more liberal because Ann Arbor is a very liberal town, but it is also a lot of extremely wealthy students. It’s pretty diverse, and has a very strong Jewish population. The motto “work hard play hard” is definitely fitting.

I’ve read some other threads where people write different things about the university and students there )) i guess it depends on experience that people get… but from what i’ve heard so fat this school is superb

@enot112 tbh umich is what you make of it. The culture can be whatever you want it to be because umich is giant. There’s nothing that makes it overly unique from any other uni per se imo, but rather the ability to choose what community to be a part of is what makes it special.

Student here, one thing that is apparently very different from other top schools:
Classes (at the earlier levels at least) are less competitive and you can find a lot more cooperation going on here than you can at other schools.
