Hey, we’re in MA too! Congrats to your son!

How long did it take your kids to get a portal invite?

Took two days for mine, I think.

C26 got theirs today (5 days after submission). Question, the application tracker has everything submitted that we sent as part of the application, but says it is awaiting first semester senior year grades, to be added when available. Is it fair to assume that those of you/your students who already got decisions did not have this listed? (It also says application complete, so it’s a little confusing.)

I just went in to D’s application tracker to double check, and there is no request for first semester senior grades. I agree it would be confusing if it also says application complete. Did your C26 happen to apply to a special program that might have additional requirements?

No, however, the UMN app filled in STARS automatically from the common app and it had not included the in-progress senior year courses. C26 updated for that and resubmitted that but the tracker still shows the date of the original auto-submission, so not sure if that’s something to do with it, but it could also possibly be that they are also looking to validate the grade trend before sending it for a decision. I have no idea how they get sorted initially so who knows? Last year’s thread did seem to show the majority of decisions coming in January so I’m guessing C26 will be in that batch this year.

Maybe the notification will go away when it processes the resubmitted STARS info? I think this auto-filling-in business is new, so there might be some glitches.

My kid applied Sep 22 through CommonApp, acceptance letter came Sep 29 (Carlson)

In state, 3.96 UW. Wondering if we’ll see merit based scholarship anytime soon. We likely won’t get anything for need based, but hoping for some merit based to take the edge off. Two kids in college at the same time is going to be rough

In my kid’s myu portal there’s a section for “My Finances” and a “Financial Aid” tab, but there 2026-2027 school year isn’t even listed yet, so maybe it’s way too early. Anyone else here have other kids at the UofM that have gone through this?

My kid submitted the app last Thursday, and he is still waiting for portal invite. Is this in the normal range, or should he email the admissions ?

Does it show “downloaded” on the Common App? Once the college actually downloads the submitted app, then typically an invite for the portal is rather quick - I would say he should get it any day now!

Took 5 business days for my kid so I’d say give it another day or so?

Yes it was downloaded on Sunday. We’ll wait a couple of days before emailing.

My daughter submitted hers on Friday also. I can see it has been downloaded, but no portal invitation either, so looks like they are in the same boat. They are probably just backed up.

Slight update and heads up for anyone who has recently submitted or plans to submit soon:

My son submitted his University of Minnesota application on September 16, and UMN downloaded it on September 17. He did not include the personal statement (essay), but he did invite a teacher to submit a Letter of Recommendation.

Last week, nearly a month later, the Common App showed that the teacher had finally started the LOR, so my son followed up with her this past Tuesday. She submitted it, even though her side showed a November 1 due date (likely set automatically by the Common App); she was obviously unaware that it was rolling admissions and should be treated differently.

UMN downloaded the LOR on October 15, and today my son received an email saying his application is now complete and will now be reviewed.

He had assumed UMN would begin reviewing his application earlier since the LOR was optional—but it turns out that once you choose to include optional materials, your application isn’t considered complete until those items are submitted. It really feels like this whole month has been stressful waiting for a decision, and it could’ve been avoided if we had known they wouldn’t even review until the LOR was submitted.

Takeaway:

If your student includes optional components (like a teacher recommendation), the application won’t be reviewed until all selected items are received—so make sure everything is submitted promptly.

I guess our decision-waiting clock has now been reset to Day 1

That is odd! My D26 assigned a teacher to submit a LOR, and the teacher still hasn’t submitted or even started it (sigh)
meanwhile, D was admitted Sept 22. I wonder why her application was received and marked complete, while your student’s was not?

Perhaps it might be a safer bet for applicants not to designate a teacher for the optional LOR for UMN, if the teacher isn’t already done writing it? My student might have been lucky that UMN went ahead and downloaded her app, but it sounds like yours wasn’t so lucky!

C26 I think indicated LOR would be sent, but the application was showing as complete as soon as they had the STARS (although, confusingly, it’s also showing they want S1 grades - trying to figure out if that’s because they want to see them or because the STARS auto-populated incorrectly (no senior courses shown) from the common app. C26 updated but it’s still showing the original date for STARS. Past years threads show most decisions in January and I think we’re resigned to that anyway.

Definitely odd! His email from UMN this morning states:

Your University of Minnesota Twin Cities application for admission and all required supporting materials have been received.

Please watch your email for any updates, as we may discover that we need more information from you before we continue our review. Your Application Tracker will reflect any additional items we may need.

We are considering your application as complete by the November 1 Early Action Deadline. Your application will now be individually reviewed and a decision will be made based on a very careful, overall assessment of the information provided in your application.

*Because you met the November 1 Early Action Deadline, you will receive your decision in Application Tracker by January 31. To log in to Application Tracker you will need vour student ID:

My son’s letter was written in August, it has been a point of contention because his teacher was not treating it as a rolling admissions application, she repeatedly told him “the due date says Nov 1”, despite him mentioning to her end of September that UMN is rolling, so they review and make decisions on a rolling basis, unlike say UW Madison who won’t even begin reviewing any applications until Nov 1.

We know his letter was written because she told my son the first week of school she had it done and ready for him and that she was already watching for the invite to come through via common app. We never anticipated she would then delay actually doing her part to upload it based on the common app deadline that showed Nov 1 for UMN.

I’m not even sure what STARS is? Is that what your high school uses to submit transcripts or grades? And are you saying in the common app your child’s senior year courses aren’t reflected at all? If so, that could definitely be why!

STARS (“Self-reported Transcript and Academic Record System”) is a platform for self-reporting all the details of a student’s HS transcript. It is the new name for what used to be called SRAR.
