University of Minnesota Early Action Class of 2030 Official Thread

S26 received acceptance 2weeks ago, 5 days after application submission. CSE major. Yesterday we saw on his portal that he’s been admitted to Honors college. No news yet on any scholarship. We are OOS (CA). S is getting excited, but we need to see (big) scholarship to make it affordable. Any thoughts on what’s the max merit scholarship UMN offers to out of state students?

The regular OOS merit scholarships typically go up to $20K/year. This is actually something that you can estimate in the NPC if you are OOS. (link)

They also have smaller add-on scholarships which can be awarded separately. (For example my S23 was awarded a regular $15K scholarship and then another $5K named scholarship came later.)

Thank you! I’ll explore the link.

I guess based on what you noted, the max is likely $20k plus any named scholarship, so possibly $25k. With the max + named scholarship, looks like the COA for UMN would be close to UC in-state (around $45k), for those not qualifying for need based aid.

So, the smaller one my son received was specifically for Jewish students in engineering, I seem to remember. Like many other universities, they have various scholarship funds endowed by people who want to support students for personal reasons. I wouldn’t bet on there necessarily being one applicable to each person’s situation. (And I think it’s also possible that he received the $5K because he didn’t already receive the max $20K.)

I would just suggest you run the NPC and go with that estimate, and if your son receives more than that, it’s icing on the cake

I just tested it, and according to the text at the bottom they seem to have updated the NPC for 2026-2027 costs, so it should be pretty accurate!

I finally ran the NPC. It indicates potential $20K merit award. Let’s see if that is offered (and if there’s any icing😊).

Thank you for sharing very helpful comments and information on this forum! Much appreciated.

Do Honors College invites also come out on Mondays?

My 2023 daughter received $15k a year (OOS). She had a good application, but much lower test scores and didn’t submit. The aid package came about 10 days after her acceptance.
