UNC is by far the best of the three academically, and a degree from UNC will carry more weight than one from either
of the other schools. UNC is steadily improving in reputation, while the other two schools are relatively unknown. The Greeley campus is beautiful with lots of trees. The dorms are rated the best in Colorado, and the food is amazing. All three campuses are rather remote. Western St. and Adams St. are in mountainous areas, while UNC is in Greeley, a small- to mid-sized city located in the midst of farmland on the eastern plains. Greeley is growing very quickly and has some nice restaurants and good theater going on. UNC has very strong programs in music, education (it started as a teachers’ training college), nursing and business. Adams and Western St. are in pretty and mountainous areas. Good luck to your son with his choices.
UNC is a relatively short drive from Denver, Boulder, and Ft. Collins. It is good for theater types. I toured it and dorms were really nice, the tour guide also raved about the food. I know some very good students with ivy stats who go there (scholarships).
I don’t hear much about the other two. I’d look at Mesa, Ft. Lewis, or UCCS over these two.
I am late to the discussion, but I second the notion that UNC is the best of the bunch. I think it’s one of the best schools in Colorado. It is top-ranked in the state for music, nursing and education (teacher training), and one of the best for business. Those are its strongest programs, but it also has good programs in english, political science, geology and biology. UNC almost has the feel of a small liberal arts college, especially on the older Central Campus, although it’s really more of a music conservatory combined with a regional university adding up to a research university. My kid chose it after being accepted to the larger, more prestigious CU Boulder and CSU Fort Collins. She said those schools felt too big and anonymous. She audited some classes at several universities and said she feels the teaching is best at UNC, perhaps because it’s a school that specializes in education. She just finished her first year and has loved every minute of it. It’s getting more difficult to get into UNC as it is constantly improving. They’re building a new Campus Commons with a performance hall. The dorms and food are outstanding. My daughter has a single in a 5-bedroom suite (all singles) with two bathrooms and a living room. I’ve never seen such a luxurious situation for students before. The food is SOOOOOOOO good. I love going up there to visit and dining at Holmes with her. The food is very healthy with lots of choices. They have an elite chef running the dining halls.
I agree that UNC is the strongest academically of the three. I attended summer school in Greeley and loved it. I also said I would be a grown-up when I became faculty and I am grown. As the former normal school in Colorado, it excels in education areas including doctoral programs in counseling and school psychology. The campus is large with different looks and feels that I found found enticing and gave everybody a nice hike from building to building. Greeley is located close to the northern front range of the Rockies While it is close to Denver, it is nearer to Loveland and Estes Park as well as Cheyenne and Laramie. I know there were sports teams, but that wasn’t a big focus. We followed CU and the Broncos since childhood. I would go back if given the choice.
Back in my day, Western wasn’t considered a top pick of Co postsecondary schools like CU, CSU (my sister graduated there and chose science and research university with a good veterinary program that my cats used) and UNC (Education). I had classmates who attended Western because it was a very good school academically for solid students and close to skiing if you liked that. It is closer to beautiful Utah and has good access to the beauty of communities on the Western slope. My classmates who attended college at schools closer to the front range did not think our classmates attending Western were getting a poorer education. Colorado has always had good schools and it’s Colorado. We never felt pressure to attend Ivies despite the credentials to attend. Those schools seemed so remote to us.
I agree with comments suggesting other Colorado schools. Don’t forget Regis in northwest Denver, a wonderful Jesuit university. I attended the Catholic college that Regis bought and incorporated our nursing and other programs. I am now an alum of Regis and impressed with the information I receive. Regis would be my choice now.
Thanks so much for the feedback. We enjoyed seeing all 3 schools and the difference in locations for all 3…even though it was a long haul but a good one.
UNC topped the list of the 3. The campus is very nice and not too small or big. Good campus tour.Shuttle service to an from Denver airport is convienant for students. Environmental science instructor was soild. Greeley had a good combination of new and old and the downtown mexican restaurant was pretty tasty. And only an hr from Estes Park.
Gunnison was beautiful, especially Creste Butte. Western State Campus tour was really good. The environmental science prof was outstanding. But could not help but feel landlocked there, especially in the winter. Too long of a bus ride to Denver and who wants to fly a little crop plane in the mts. to get to Denver. School seemed bigger than 2800.
Adams St was a pleasant surprise, especially after admissions rep at Western said it would not be worth looking at compared to WSU. We just about did not go but did go. Nice campus and campus tour guide was really good. Alamosa is an older town but brewery downtown was good. We liked how the college was built in and around the city, same as UNC. Admissions rep just read off the computer when we met so not real impressive but she was really nice. The Sand Dune National Park was incredible. Again, a little too small for us but dis seem bigger.
