University of Oregon [exploring major] vs University of Portland [engineering]

Which is best? For UP it would be for engineering major, for UO it would be for the exploring program…

Well if you want to major in engineering and one school has it and the other doens’t…which do you think would be the better fit?

Yea! They are COMPLETELY different schools, both good in their own right. What do you want to do and how do they compare cost wise. I’m in OR. I know both well.

He doesnt know, Maybe engineering but he’s really not sure… cost wise it would be about the same as we’re out of state…

We’ll if engineering is even a possibility only one offers.

Yep, he’s locked out of that option if he chooses U of O. The obvious choices are Oregon State and Portland State if he wants to have the possibility and you want a public. Otherwise I’d choose UP and start in engineering. It’s far easier to change out of engineering than it is to switch in.

If an engineering major is a strong possibility, then it is best to go to a college where that major exists and is accessible to the student.

What other majors are possibilities?

Computer science, data science, math… all of which they have at UO…

Yes. But that’s not engineering. They’re tangential I suppose. It sounds like engineering isn’t a end deal but just noting that was the choice at U Portland so it can’t be replicated at Oregon.

This is a simple decision. U of O locks out engineering. If that’s OK, that’s OK. If engineering has to be in the mix, Oregon is the wrong school. Only your student can make that decision, but it’s the first one they need to make. You’re comparing apples and oranges and asking us which is better. They’re different. Only your kid knows which one they want.
