University of Oregon, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Baylor, Point Loma Nazarene, University of Washington

I have a 1560 (all three sections with 520 CR, 540 Math, 500 W) SAT, 3.85 unweighted GPA, Eagle Scout.

Applying Single Choice to Baylor and my admissions counselor at Baylor said my chances are really good to get in.
I am a Washington state resident and U of Wash accepts 2/3’s of residents. Here are my schools and application decision:

Baylor: single choice early action
Point Loma: Regular Decision
Texas Tech: Regular Decision
University of Oregon: Regular Decision
University of Washington: Regular Decision
Texas A&M: Regular Decision
Texas Christian University: Regular Decision
Gonzaga University: Regular Decision
Creighton University: Regular Decision
Pacific Lutheran University: Regular Decision

Please chance me!! I’m also a white male.

Have you run the NPCs?
There’s an odd mix of Evangelical Christian, Mainstream Protestant, and Catholic schools on your list - is that intentional?
What’s your parents’ budget?
What’s your major for UW?

Your SAT is going to hurt you…

My major is Biology, and my income is +150k.

Ask your parents how much they’re willing/able to invest for your college education. Compare that to your EFC. If they can pay their EFC or more, you’re good with most colleges. If not (as is the most common case) you’ll be looking for merit. The answer will greatly affect your college list. Please go ask ASAP.

Baylor: single choice early action => reach
Point Loma: Regular Decision => safety
Texas Tech: Regular Decision => match to unpredictable (depends on # of OOS applicants, since there’s a cap)
University of Oregon: Regular Decision => match
University of Washington: Regular Decision => high match
Texas A&M: Regular Decision => not happening due to caps on OOS students (public university = priority to instate)
Texas Christian University: Regular Decision => high match
Gonzaga University: Regular Decision => match
Creighton University: Regular Decision => match
Pacific Lutheran University: Regular Decision => safety

Point Loma is an odd choice. You should apply to Western Washington, Washington State, or Oregon State. For biology, Lewis&Clark and Whitman are good. Whitman would be a high reach but Lewis&Clark would be a match. However, if TAMU is a good “fit”, L&C wouldn’t be.
What do you want to do with Biology? It’s a degree that pretty much requires graduate study so choosing a college that supports this goal would be important. In that sense, Creighton or GOnzaga may be better for you than Baylor or UWashington, as would L&C.

Go instate

Point Loma offered a $13,000 scholarship (every year) if I apply and get in.

How is a match to most of these state schools? Which have a range of average SAT scores from the 1600s to mid 1800s…

Yes but just because they offered money doesn’t mean it’s a good fit. It may well be - it’s an excellent evangelical college and it’s location is hard to beat. But the “fit” is essential. You can’t just go and think their particular mission won’t matter. It’s a conservative (Church of the Nazarene) religious university dedicated to helping students grow in their faith. You’ll have religious requirements in terms of classes and out of class behavior. You definitely should visit. It’s like Baylor but more religious, and it’s unlike any other college on your list, where faith is considered one part of your life, not THE central part of your life.

I’m assuming you’re working on the SAT? Do you hit 1600s in practice tests?

My faith is a huge part of my life and my college counselor recommended it to me. My practice tests were 1650s but I personally believe my SAT score was screwed over by the June SAT mess up. Personally, I don’t want to take an annoying test again. I can get into a lot of schools. I am curious of your reasoning for me getting into these schools like TCU, and UW. Doesn’t necessarily have to be posted here, you could private message me. But I would sincerely appreciate some explanation.

I also attend a college prep small high school that is very Christian. I take a lot of religion classes.

It may be harder to get into A&M with the SAT but they really like Eagle Scouts as does Baylor. Texas A&M out of state tuition is still less expensive that Baylor. (52k v. 37k)

TAMU has a cap on how many OOS applicants it can accept. Once oos legacies, oos athletes, and oos academic stars have been processed, I doubt there’ll be space for OP.

OP: You sound like a good fit for TCU and your results, while far from the 75th , are within range. And you’re in-state for UW AND applying either undecided or for a non competitive major so you should be fine, it’s a high match ie., less than 50% but still not a reach.

If you want strong Christian colleges, what about Wheaton in Illinois, Calvin or Hope in Michigan? Or do you consider them too high reaches for you? Even Loyola (LMU-LA) may fit, unless you don’t consider Catholics as Christian (although it’d be a reach). You also have St Edward’s in Austin as well as Cal Lutheran where you have a decent shot.

Your list has many similar schools as my daughters. She is also applying to Gonzaga, Point Loma, TCU, UW (and a bunch of others). I totally understand the reason that Point Loma is on your list. It may be different, but not as different as what people are implying. We visited. If you are ok going to a dry campus, you will find caring christian kids there. You will find christian kids at any of the other schools as well, but it will also include the partying aspect. Yes UW and Point Loma are totally different…but a student that can be happy at one could also be happy at the other…it’s just a different experience.

Update: I have been accepted to Baylor and enrolled. Thank you all for your input.
