Hello everyone. My daughter is having an awful time with her roommate this is her first year at the University of Pittsburgh. She was assigned the roommate from Hell. She has had to wait outside her room to get in while male guest were in the room doing well need I say more? claimed watching video game. How long does it take to open a door a few feet away? and the door is always left unlocked, no TV allowed etc. Daughter tried to reason with roommate and got nowhere and nowhere with the RA or RD. Concerned about unlocked door i contacted RD she was very agitated that i called(said other schools don’t talk to parents about issues) I insisted that an unlocked door is against university safety tips and it wasn’t fair for her to wait for entry into her room. I was told no one steals 7 in the morning or in the dorm. Anyway I had to call above her and now my daughter is being bullied and threatened to be moved three blocks into lothrop nursing medical dorm if she either agrees to a contract that favors her roommate where my daughter has to check in to let her know when she leaves and returns over her weekend, male guest can stay until she takes her shower( she previously just asked that her guest leave at 10 on weeknights and didn’t bother her on weekends) and roommate also wants my daughter to check with her when we assist with bringing her luggage up to room. Just some of the unreasonable terms the RD has sided with this roommate on all due to our involvement seeking assistance for our daughter. Only two issues were not worked out for the roommate contract but after the telephone call about them another trivial issue pops up daily and is approved in the contract by the RD. We can not find any information on the room change process does anyone know? RD will not let her read the form in private just wants her to sign any paper put before her and not to even think about letting us see it. I apologize for being so long but this isn’t even all of it. She’s a wreck, lost sleep, appetite, time, and trouble focusing on her studies. Said they have to move both. Feels she should be the one to go since low tvs locked doors wake her up in the morning but not the loud traffic, students outside, and the other doors which are closing on the floor and the tvs on the sides of their room. Both RA and RD said roommate listens to my daughter on phone outside door; she thinks we whisper about her. Since the telephone inquiry the have done a complete 360 against my daughter.Of course my daughter wants to stay with her friends but living with this girl is impossible especially now that the RD is penalizing and bullying her to sign. Where can she go? what can she do? What can we do about the repercussions? This is the most horrible first year experience at the University of Pittsburgh. No one should have to go through such nonsense. This is taking such a toll on her and all of us as a family. And it’s killing me to see her being treated like this and we are paying for it.

This might be a stretch but I’ve known this to happen: Does your daughter have a friend on the hall with whom she’d like to live who is currently rooming with someone who’s friendly with your daughter’s roommate? Perhaps they can agree to trade rooms. Residential staff would agree to that.

Is your daughter looking at sororities? I don’t know if they can become a residential option before next year.

You should also post on the Pitt board here. It is a pretty active board and someone who is knowledgable might have a suggestion. (“AwesomeOpossum” is particularly helpful on that board.) At the least, people will tell you good points about Lothrop.

I looked up the UPitt housing site, and it appears that cards are needed to enter rooms (no keys) in all but one housing building,so how could a door be left unlocked unless it was also left open?

It doesn’t matter what “other schools” do. Schools don’t like parental involvement, but if you’re paying for the room, you have every right to intervene (after giving your child an opportunity to work things out). And an unlocked room is a health/safety issue.

You really should post your concerns on the Pitt board.

How often do you bring luggage up to her room? Are you there on a regular basis? How ling did your D have to wait for the guy to put his pants on or whatever? How often does that happen? No TV allowed? Can’t your D listen with headphones? It seems that’s what most kids do.

I think the fact that the RD has “sided” with the roommate is telling, frankly. And I find it hard to believe that the RD will not allow your D to review the contract or ask you about it.

This is a very strange story.

In the future, it will be easier to help/read if you include paragraphs in your post. Thanks!

Why don’t you see if there is a possiblity of moving into a single. It would be money well spent.

It is hard to tell what your complaints were about the roommate. We’re they:

Your d had to wait for a male guest to leave. (How often did that occur and how long was the wait)

The roommate keeps the door unlocked when they are not there ( it may be a matter of roommate adjusting to adult responsibilities). OR

keeps the door open to socialize.

D is not allowed to watch tv (what time is she trying to watch and does it conflict with sleep or study time)

You are often bringing luggage to Ds room which makes roommate uncomfortable. It is perfectly reasonable to check with roommate first. Anything else would be rude.

Is your D going home every weekend?

Darned iPad. 5. (Perfectly normal)
