My daughter is possibly interested in double majoring in biochemistry and English. She wants to go somewhere where the students want to learn not have to learn. She has been accepted at UROC and received some merit aid (we thought it would have been a higher amount) and is waiting to hear if she got into the honors program at Elon. I know UROC right now is a more well-known university especially with research but I don’t know if it is worth paying $25,000+ more a year. My daughter was very impressed with the people and professors she met at Elon and likes the idea of studying abroad. Can anyone tell us how strong Elon University is in the science department? She most likely will be going on to grad or medical school so not sure if we want to spend so much money now for undergrad. Is a degree from UROC worth the huge price tag (we do not qualify for any financial aid)?
Elon University is a great school - she can get a great education there and certainly go to med school or grad school afterwards.
Whether or not University of Rochester is worth the extra money is a personal decision. But if your daughter is happy with Elon, and you can save the money for her to go there and be in the honors program and get a great education…it may not be.
Elon is not really “learning for learning’s sake”. Their “turning around” in the past 15 years or so was specifically in the direction of renouncing “learning for learning’s sake” and focusing on experiential learning and marketing to career-focused undergrads. URoc is also more research-focused.
Is it worth the huge price tag? It’s a difficult question.
Elon is a great school but the fit is very different from the fit at URochester.
Perhaps wait till you hear whether she got into Honors at Elon?
I don’t know about UROC but one of the things that impressed my D was the stress of the importance of research and experiential learning at Elon. As an honors fellow research is required. Did you attend Rising Phoenix Weekend? We were very impressed with the Professor and advisors that we met. There is also a separate advisory group for pre-health profession majors (Pre-med, PT, PA, etc), Let’s also not forget how much better the weather is in NC!
