University of San Francisco & Eugene Lang

I’ve been to San Francisco and NYC before and I really liked both cities. I was wondering how good of a college USF and Eugene Lang are and if anybody here knows anything about them. Is it an easy place to make friends at those colleges? Will i be able to get a good job with a degree from there? I’m planning on majoring in Finance or Economics and i currently go to North Carolina State. There is no section for Eugene Lang and the USF one is dead, so thats why i’m asking here.

Eugene Lang is an interesting school…but they don’t offer economics. They do offer a few programs with the New School’s graduate departments (including Economics), which would allow you to monkey around with a weird undergrad major and get a grad degree in economics from a respectable university. The New School is a very unique institution, but I would only recommend it if you are more interested in learning than getting jobs. Especially in the finance world, it is doubtful that it will take you anywhere. You will probably learn more institutional economics, so I stress taking as much calculus as possible outside of the classroom. Luckily, a lot of the quantitative reasoning courses you wouldn’t expect to find at Eugene Lang are offered at Cooper Union, a respectable institution which has a formal exchange with the college. Internships and extracurricular opportunities will be abundant given the location, which is within arms reach of Wall Street. Certainly you can do a lot with a Eugene Lang degree, but it will require imagination.

i live in the bay area and USF isn’t that well known but is respectable from what i have heard.

Does anybody have anymore info to share?

I, too, would be interested in more info on Eugene Lang, as it is emerging as my D’s #1 choice (writing concentration). Anybody out there with experience?

if youre at all considering law school, usf is a good choice. look at https://www.law.harvard.edu/admissions/jd/apply/classprofile/ugcolleges.php

its on there TWICE!
also, in my experience, nyc is more expensive than sf

i know nothing about eugene lang

gardenmom14: My D just began her sophomore year at Eugene Lang (dual degree w/Parsons). She transfered from an LAC. Last year she discovered a love of writing, and this semester has begun what she says is the “greatest fiction writing class”. The writing classes at Lang are amazing, and there are plenty of them to choose from. My D lives off campus, having found a roommate (an adult) through craigslist. Rent, while ultra expensive, is still less expensive overall than living in a dorm, and since my D plans on living in the city year-round, she doesn’t have to worry about being forced out in May.

PM me if you’d like to “talk” further/off-line.
