Hi! My D is narrowing down her choices for a college, and one of them is the University of Scranton. She really likes the academics and vibe of the school, and feels that the people are really nice there, but the question that has not been really answered is, what kind of music and theater programs are available at the University of Scranton. My D has been very much involved in the choir and musical theater at her high school and neighboring schools during the past four years, and she would really like to continue being involved in the performing arts in college.

Could someone give me an answer on the types of programs that are available, and are these events popular with the college? Thanks so much for your help.

There is a forum for drama and theater, I think you will get more feedback there as well…

Thanks for the info, but saw nothing about the University of Scranton on that forum.

@jgalee1: even if there isn’t anything about the University of Scranton posted, you should post the question above on the musical theater or theater forum. Someone who participates in one of those forums is more likely to be able to answer your question.

Are you looking for extra curricular participation or a degree program? Scranton offers a BA in Theater, but only has a minor in Music History. They have active musical performance groups. You can contact Cheryl Y. Boga, director of performance music, at music@scranton.edu, or visit [Performance Music: Academics: The University of Scranton](http://www.scranton.edu/music) to find out more about the music programs. I know they do several theatrical performances during the year, one always during Family Weekend. There is a group called The University Players which is open to all students [The University of Scranton Theatre and Home of the Scranton Players](http://www.thescrantonplayers.com/)

As an NEPA resident, I will say that the University of Scranton’s Theatre department is underrated. The program director, Richard Larsen is fantastic. The Royal Theatre is beautiful. The guest directors are excellent. Close proximity to New York and Philadelphia allows for many professionals to come to Scranton to work with the students. I have been attending the University Players shows since 2005 and can’t say enough good about the program. If, however, your daughter is only interested in Musical Theatre, and not straight plays, she may not like the program because the players only do, at most, one musical per season. If you would like more information, please feel free to message me. I would be happy to help you. I am not affiliated with the University or the program at all. However, I do have a background in music and theatre.
