University of Singapore, US Resident?

<p>I’m an American-born Chinese and my 1st cousin went to the University of Singapore so I’m thinking of adding it to my college list.</p>

<p>But I’m not sure how hard it is to get in as a foreigner.</p>

<p>To give a sense of where I’m at, this is my current college list:</p>

<p>1) Northwestern
2) Emory
3) Johns Hopkins
4) Tufts University

<p>My college counselor said I had a 1 in 2 chance of getting into Northwestern. (He’s very “well-ranked” amongst college guidance counselors.)</p>

<p>How hard is it to get into the University of Singapore? My Chinese is a little rusty.</p>

<p>You should contact the consular officer in charge of information about higher education at the Consulate of Singapore closest to where you live. That person will be able to help you find out more about applying to institutions in Singapore. If your cousin still has friends on campus, perhaps one of them could help you track down more information. </p>

<p>How is your Chinese related to entering NUS? Anyway, I can’t tell you anything since you haven’t given your stats yet.</p>

<p>It’s great that you are considering NUS. I lived in singapore for two years and it is wonderful city, very diverse, clean and safe. Educatioon and facilities in NUS also top notch, with fantastic research opportunities. Also, consider Nanyang Technological University, though in rankings it does quite worse than NUS, actually it’s as good as NUS in every aspect, except maybe pure sciences. To give some thought about level of NTU education, I will add that they have partnership and/or exchange programs with Cambridge, MIT, ETH Zurich, KAIST, Imperial College and so on… Also have a look Singapore Institute of Technology, it’s new so it will be easier to get accepted. Don’t be discouraged that it’s new, government in singapore is very generous and strict to their education, so all public universities in singapore are very strong in their fields.</p>

<p>I’m actually a Singaporean (but studying in Cambridge now) and thought it might be interesting to share my opinion. It really depends on the course you’re applying for. If it’s medicine or law, there isn’t much of a chance to be honest. Otherwise, I’ve heard from my friends who have chosen to stay in Singapore that they require a contrasting subject from their GCSEs to get into their course. I have to say NUS is quite competitive because most Singaporeans would strive to get in (whether because they don’t want to go overseas or as a safety net). The dorms aren’t incredible (they’ve some pretty hilarious rules :wink: ) but Singapore is quite an amazingly convenient city. And safe. And there’s good food everywhere, particularly seafood which Cambridge is lacking.</p>
