University of St. Thomas vs University of Houston for Accounting

Hello, I would appreciate some input on this. I want to go into accounting. I read that UH is way better and their business/accounting is great. Others say it depends on what size school. I don’t think I would mind either… I’m not sure. I received a full ride from UST, so money isn’t the issue with UST. UH + FAFSA given me a decent amount.

I’m Catholic but I’m not crazy about all the required religious/theological classes that I have to take at UST.

I heard that the the bigger the school the bigger the alumni pool and that will help with jobs? I am in an organization that will help me find jobs and internships, so I think I’ll be fine.

It sounds like you want to go to UH, so if you can afford it, go. It’s a fine school.

Accounting is typically a high demand major.

If you need to take loans to go to UH, then consider St. Thomas - but buy a warm jacket!!

You’re good either way.

Hi and Welcome! Can you please share a little more information for context:

  1. What state are you from?
  2. Where do you hope to live after you get a job after college?
  3. Have you visited both schools?

I may have some perspectives to share that others may not with such a different combination of colleges. We are from MN. We’ve considered and toured both of those schools and I currently have one of my sons going to a school in Texas (but he chose not to apply to Houston after visiting it).

There’s a St. Thomas in Houston as well, I assume that’s what OP is talking about. I do t know much about either program but as tsbna44 demonstrates, UH has a much more far-reaching reputation. I’ve been on the campus before and I like it!

oooh - sorry - didn’t know that. I guess I’d make sure their degree allows you to sit for the CPA. It doesn’t say that on their website.

Good luck.

So sorry, UST- Houston, I forgot to add that. I have visited both schools but it’s been awhile. I plan to visit again.

My brother goes to UH and my mom prefers it as well (so we can be together). She’s willing to help me pay but in the end she told me it’s my decision.

Are you close enough that you can go visit both again since it’s been a while?

Yes, both are 30 minutes away. When I first went to UST, I liked the campus and they told me for the business program that I could get a bachelors and masters at the same time.

That’s great - but two things:

  1. Make sure you can sit for the cpa with their accounting degree.

  2. I understand a masters (in accounting) but if you were seeking an MBA, sure you could do it now - and for free. At the same time, an MBA is great for later - if you need to pivot to a new career or you want a big salary boost. An MBA after undergrad gets you little if any boost.

If you’re talking about a Masters in Accounting - that’s different.

So ask about what your degree from there qualifies you to do.
