I saw this as well as Santa Clara University’s plans to open a medical school. Was curious about your thoughts on these….
Neither school has applied to the LCME to start the accreditation process.
The process is slow and very thorough. It’ll probably be at least 4-5 years before either school will open.
Clearly additional medical schools are needed, esp in California which has numerous “healthcare deserts” and huge supply of well qualified med school applicants.
SCU’s partnership with a Sutter Health insures that SCU’s school will have adequate clinical training sites. (Like Kaiser Permanente’s med school that exclusively uses KP hospitals and clinics for clinical rotation with its students.)
UP plans to partner with Dignity Health to provide clinical sites for UP’s med students.
The close partnerships with a single healthcare corporation seems to be the trend in medical education. And not necessarily a good trend.
The NEJM is running an on-going series on the increasing corporatization of healthcare in the US. It’s very interesting, if you have access to NEJM, I highly recommend reading it.
