University of Utah vs University of Houston for Biomedical engineering

Hi there,

I am an international student here in the US. I have applied for both university of Utah and university of Houston for Biomedical engineering undergraduate program.

I am really having hard time deciding which one is better. Utah’s program has a higher rank, whereas UH is generally a strong engineering school.

I actually need help from people who study BME or know anything about these schools that can assist me.

Thanks in advance

Pick the cheaper one because you can’t do much w an undergraduate degree in that major. You’ll need grad school.

Biomedical engineering is the one engineering program that requires a graduate degree (many students pick it because they think it’s somehow "medical’, but it’s more “laboratory” than anything else.) As GMTplus7 said ^, pick the cheapest.
I’d note however that if your user name indicates a belief system/religion, you may want to check the campus’ faith-based groups about how welcoming both are, and choose the most “welcoming” one.

Thank you so much for your help, both school actually have diversity and my parents will support me financially. Also, I know that this major will not be adequate to get a good job, so I am looking for a school that will help me to get acceptance in one of the top universities for the graduate degree.

Thanks again for your advice

Honestly, it’s not the school, it’s really what YOU do there.
Are you in the honors program at either one?

No I am not. I am an undergraduate student.

Honors is for undergraduate.
Check to see if you can still apply to either one as it’d improve your experience and help you achieve:

At UH, if you meet the criteria (1300 SAT, strong academic record), email this:

My name is … and I am a recently admitted international student. I’ve been told I’d be great for the Honors College, but because international deadlines are different and I wasn’t aware of having to apply to the Honors College before my decision, I am writing to ask whether you might be able to consider my application now. Indeed, my SAT score is … CR+M, I have taken … advanced classes including calculus and advanced biology, I am bilingual(/trilingual) and I love learning. I hope you’ll be able to consider my application.
Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely, … ← your name

At UUtah, use the same basic criteria

Dear Dean Torti,

  • same letter

I go to University of Houston, and it’s a friendly campus to international students and loves to brag that it’s the second most diverse 4-year school in the country. I’ve heard the international students office is pretty crappy, but there are many, many cultural/ religious/ international clubs and organizations, and they host a lot of events.

Also, I’d try what MYOS1634 recommended. The Honors College here is great for engineering/ science majors.

Since your goal is a top graduate program, you might be advised to check the faculty members’ CVsto see is any of them in the BME dept came from top schools. They will be the ones writing your recommendations.

Thank you so much. I have never heard about it. I really appreciate your help

Good. What is your view on the engineering college as a whole ? Is it hard to get high GPA like >3.5?

I just did so. Actually both have teachers who graduated from top universities… Utah probably has more.
