University of Washington Seattle - OOS [TX resident, top 18% rank, sociology or communication]

WWU would match your state’s criteria and would be a safety. Same for SOU.

I assume you’re applying to Oregon and its Honors college. I would recommend Whitman as another target.

Look into Lewis&Clark, Willamette, UPuget Sound; UPortland, SeattleU (both Catholic like Gonzaga but less conservative) in case one works well for you.

All in all, UW for Sociology (or Communication) is a good target and you should apply to the Honors College because you have a shot. I’d say 70-30 you get in and 50-50 for Honors.

Unless your family is moving there or you’re interested in widening your search, I would remove Pitt - it’s a great university in a cool neighborhood but it looks really out of your geographical preferences.

Are they moving to Seattle?

These do not seem to be that close to Seattle. State of Kansas policies are not very LGBT friendly.

Without an unweighted GPA, even those familiar with University of Washington admission will not be able to help you much. Weighted GPA is not meaningful without knowing what the weighting system is and whether it matches what a college of interest uses

It looks like the GPA ranges shown (3.74-3.98 or 95-100) are unweighted, so you need to recalculate that to get an idea of whether you are in reasonable range for admission.

In the end, they simply need a plan.

If they want to be near family (i.e. Seattle), they need to revise the list and include either UW Bothell or Tacoma or Seattle U. WWU is just a few hours. All would be safe.

Within driving range, Oregon is on their list and safe. Gonzaga a quick flight away.

I don’t get CU, Pitt or Kansas…but that’s just me.

Given the student wants to study sociology or communications, the where isn’t going to matter too match - UW or otherwise.

So no matter the odds of getting into UW, easy and nearby entrants abound and OP simply needs to pick one as a back up.
