Ugh I know I love the lake! Good luck! We are a hockey family (probably so many others!)
In answer to your question about what my son liked about Wisconsin and Michigan (and I am sorry this is long):
-
Foremost, the whole area just had a vibe that he liked. As we drove onto the bridge coming in from the south on our first visit, my sonās eyes bugged out. As a friend of mine said about her son when he first saw his college of choice, āIt just made him light up.ā
-
Same about the campus. We parked down at the end of State St. and we walked the whole place. The variation from the more urban side, over to the Union on the lake, up the hill to Bascom Hall, down by the dorms on the lake . . . it is very unique.
-
My son is athletic, and although he does not have intercollegiate aspirations, the two amazing athletic centers and all the intramural fields wowed him.
-
He is a big sports fan - weāve never had more fun at a game than we had at Camp Randall. And the Kohl Center is a beautiful arena.
-
He liked the feel of the business school. It was not as awe-inspiring as Ross at Michigan, but it had a more collegial feel than Ross.
My son also really, really liked Michigan.
-
The campus is impressive. The buildings are more massive (which may be amplified by the fact that is much more flat than Madison) and it does have a sense of grandeur to it as one stands on the quads and looks around at the big buildings.
-
The school exudes a kind of strength that appealed to my son. While he loved the more relaxed, happy feeling at Wisconsin, Michigan has a more intense, high-energy feel that really appealed to him, also.
-
The Ross Business School is clearly the most impressive building I have seen on any campus - and weāve seen lots of campuses. (We are waiting to hear on whether he has been accepted at Ross - there are other programs at Michigan in which he is interested but, in his words, he does not think he can say no if he gets into Ross.)
-
Ann Arbor offers a lot. Great town. I think we both preferred Madison, but Ann Arbor offers a lot while still having a college town feel.
(As for me, I liked the fact that Michigan allows off-campus students to have a dining plan. At Madison, if I understand correctly, you can use your card to pay a la carte in the dining halls, but that is not quite the same - I will worry about him eating right if he is cooking for himself all the time.)
We live in North Carolina. UNC is a great university with a really beautiful campus, and Chapel Hill is a great college town. However, my son takes UNC for granted because it is the local school where he has seen dozens of football and basketball games over the years, and he wants to go on an adventure somewhere far from home.
Thanks- ugh this all is so stressful. My son also applied Business. But I think they can also get in for pre-business or their second choice major. Not sure how hard it then is to get into business though after that. If you get into Ross thatās a no brainer - no way my son is!!
I saw in my kidās portal in their LOCI it turned all their apostropheās into some weird symbol - like an upside down question mark. Did that happen to anyone else?
Yep
oh good. I guess just assume itās on their end? Their portal is so antiquated.
That happened to us, too. So strange.
You think on their end? Nothing else to do. Not like they will think our kids did that!!
Iām sure itās on their end. And if it happened to all of us, they probably wonāt think anything of it. Strange glitch for sure!
exactly- mean to word that more of obviously itās on their end, not a question lol. LONG day!
Hello- first time using this site. My in state daughter was deferred and sending in updated grades. I have seen a lot in here about sending in letter of continued interest. I am wondering about the merits of this as the instructions say to only send in specific information and not additional. My daughter pointed out that other colleges encourage and/ or give instructions specific to sending in loci but Madison does not. Could this be viewed as ignoring the instructions?
Thoughts?
Thanks
There is a space on the self report grades portal to submit additional info, sort of like a loci. 3000 character max. So if she submits, it needs to go there. If she already put her mid year grades in that update she wonāt be able to go back in.
100% what OregonMom2024 said!!! You can only submit both at the same time ONCE. The 3000 characters is essentially enough room for a one-page LOCIāish type message to admissions of your daughter wanting to attend Wisconsin and any new factors (awards, ecās, etcā¦). Good luck!!!
Yes she did provide some additional info in that space. She made some statements about her continued interest versus a whole letter of continued interest.
MADISON
Can I Provide Additional Materials for Consideration?
Please do not send any additional documents unless specifically requested, as we are unable to accept them and they will not impact your decision.
When self-reporting your grades, you will have the opportunity to share any additional information at that time. Please note that this form can only be submitted once.
versus MICHIGAN
Thank you for submitting your application to the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts for fall 2024. We are working on your admissions decision and will notify you by early April.
We are certain we have enough information at this time to make a decision.
However, if you would like to communicate your continued interest in the University of Michigan, or share any additional information, please fill out the Expression of Continued Interest (ECI) form.
The Expression of Continued Interest form is
NOT required for consideration in our process. If you choose to submit this form, we prefer that you do so by March 8.
To fill out the form, log in to Enrollment Connect, navigate to the Action Items section,
Iāve read about sending a separate loci to your regional admissions counselor, etc. She seems to think that it is not in her best interest to write a whole letter because they specifically asked not to provide additional information outside grades, extra curriculars. and new achievements. She is also 17 and hasnāt been through this process before.
I wonder if she should still send a letter to admissions?
I totally agree with your daughter not sending in additional information that Wisconsin specifically said not to (LOCI, letters of Rec, etcā¦), but others will still probably do it. Unfortunately, although Iāve seen this asked before, I havenāt seen a response if sending that information would actually hurt or help your daughter.
Iām a boring, conservative, rule follower thoughā¦
Itās up to you and your daughter, but this part (at least with regard to Wisconsin) seems to say that nothing outside of self-reported grades and the 3,000 characters will be accepted. My son did have his school counselor forward his official grades through the Common App, but perhaps they will ignore that too.
Yes, thanks for that response. She seemed to feel strongly that she should not and she referenced those 2 examples that I listed above and an additional one from another college where they specifically reference how to handle letters of continued interest.
In her opinion, disregarding instructions is not a great look for an application. I, on the other hand, read this site and didnāt think it would hurt.
Oh well I guess itās too late anyway according to what others have responded
I think your points are spot on. I had virtually the same impressions way back in time (1971)when I was coming from NJ and looking at both schools. Compared to Rutgers both were like out of a movie.
The two Wisconsin Unions both offer meal deals for all students. $5. Swipe & Save Dining Deals Ā» Wisconsin Union
Even when I lived way off campus I would often buy lunch at the Liz Waters dining hall. It was so close to my classes. He wont starve.
I appreciate the reassurance. I was not aware of the $5 deals - that seems too good to be true.
I was probably superimposing my own experience - I lived in an apartment my senior year, and my roommate and I went off meal plan. That was fine until things got busy in mid-November. Reasonably healthy eating went out the window in favor of fast crap. I was back on meal plan second semester. I was worried my son would suffer the same harm. (You could pay to go into the dining hall, but it was stupidly expensive - it was 40 years ago and it was a lot more than $5 even then.) Thank you!
Now if he would just be accepted . . . .
Sorry for the slow reply, BF1216. I appreciate the kind words.
Wisconsin should not assume he would not come if accepted. My son was cagey about it, but Wisconsin is/was his first choice. (In part because it IS out of state - he wants to head out on his own path.)
I say is/was because he was so disappointed not to be accepted Early Action that he seems to be seeing all the virtues in his other options. I am not sure I know what he is really thinking; he really feels; I am not sure he does. But maybe he did not land far from the tree: a million years ago, I was waitlisted at a school I really wanted to attend and, for months, I fell in love with all the great things about my second choice. Then I got into that other school off the waitlist and my months of rationalizing went out the window in about 0.6 seconds.
