Obviously, universities can and will examine the semester (composite) grades on students’ transcripts, but do they necessarily look at every single test, project, quiz, homework, etc. score in our high school careers?

I am posting this question because I am interested in understanding how thoroughly admissions officers inspect transcripts(and what they focus on).

From what I’ve heard, when looking at transcripts, adcoms look at:

1) Grade Trend (are the student’s grades improving or declining?) Obviously the later is better as declining grades raise red flags for admissions

2) Strength of Courses (for eg. all APs, Honors, IBs)

Almost every admissions officer I’ve met have said to me: Course Difficulty trumps GPA

Yes, but my question is whether adcoms evaluate specific assignment scores in the subjects.
For example, do they look at that particular grade you received for a quiz on March 31, 2011

OR

do they simply look at your overall, cumulative grade, which are your semester grades and GPA.

In the public schools my kids attend, the transcripts don’t even list semester grades for year-long courses–just final course grades.

I can’t imagine there’s a school in the country where transcripts include much more than course name, level (e.g., Honors, AP), semester grades, exam grades and final grades. Nor can I imagine any college or university where the admissions want more information than that. They’re almost buried alive under applications as it is.

It depends on what your school puts on the official transcripts. Most only put semester grades, but some put quarter, as well. Ask your Guidance Counselor at school.
