I am applying this fall 2007.
i’m planning to apply to around 15 universities. 5 goal universities, I want to get in.
5 universities at my level
and 5 universities for back up.

the 5 goal universities are
MIT
Harvard
Stanford
Cornell
CalTech
University of California, at Berkley

Now I need the names of 5 universities at my level, and 5 universities for back up. The back up universities should be good in the sense that I’ll be able to transfer the university I named above…

My GPA is ~ 3.8/4.0
My SAT score is 1990. I requested MCQ verification though…
I have doubt, because of the eraser I was using left some dark marks.

Anyway, please suggest the names of the universities I asked for.

It should preferably be in CA, or North-East USA

I forgot to tell you that I’m interested in sciences. Not medical.
I haven’t decided more than that.
i would appreciate suggestions asap so i could begin applying

EC = Extra Curricular, also Awards, Honors, Accomplishments, Hooks, etc.
Class rank? GPA doesn’t matter much
School type?
Also list your Math/CR/Writing spread; writing does not matter much for some schools.

There are no merit based scholarships are these schools; unless your family makes less than 60k/year, expect loans.

Unless you have amazing EC, MIT, Harvard, Stanford, CalTech is way out of your reach. Berkley and Cornell are achievable but its still reachish.

What type of EC’s do I need.
Awards and Honors are from schools mostly.
i never compiled all my accomplishments and EC’s, since I’m attending a American High School outside U.S.A., since I shifted before high schoo.
i don’t know what hooks are

what type of EC’s and accomplishments do they look for. can you people give some idea?

@FellowCCViewer
Then it depends on the stat of your school; if its some school with no competition or some country high school in Mississippi, its not going to matter much. (But add geographical diversity points, class rank is definitely less prestigious that lets say an ivy feeder.)

Yeah… sry, but with 1990, you wont make the cut. MIT routinely turns down 2400s who have won AIME awards, have stellar ECs, and are like n.1 in competitive HS.

Even the lower 25% of MIT has 720 math score… so you’ll be hardpressed by competition (upper 25% is 800)

Well, I wouldn’t say it regularly turns those people down, but it does turn some of them down, surely.

Apples:

First off, apples, are you an American citizen? That will make a big difference. Do you have in-state residency somewhere?

I agree with those who say you’ve chosen some schools that seem like super longshots. Some longshots come in, but most don’t. Most of the kids admitted to MIT have stats much higher than yours, unless there’s something we don’t know about.

You don’t need five safety schools. By its nature, a safety school is a place where you’re bound to get in. If you apply to five safeties, you will get in to five safeties. And that’s silly.

If you want to get scholarship money, then your focus is way off base. Then applying to more “safety” schools would be a good idea to see what they can give you.

If that isn’t much of a factor, then Tarhunt’s advice of only applying to one or two safeties makes sense.

Yes, I’m a US-born citizen. But, as I said before, i moved out of U.S.A. temporarily before high school because of some family reasons. Yes, I’m giving my U.S. address as my permanent address.
I know that getting into MIT is enough. But is there nothing that MIT could possibly want?
US citizen living outside U.S.A. . I can introduce a culture or something.
anyway, do you suggest I make another thread or just continue with this as i guide to help me get in MIT.

are there any other things I should tell u.

there are quite a lot of americans that live overseas though… I am one, and so are another hundreds of kids in my school.
I think you need a bigger hook, something interesting. are you a native american? being female also helps for MIT (slightly)…

How good are you at soccer? Good enough to be a recruited athlete? If so, then your chances just improved considerably. You’ll need to contact the soccer coach, probably send tapes of yourself in action, etc. If not, then there’s no hook there.

By all means, apply to MIT, but please understand that you’re a longshot and, short of winning some prestigious international science and technology fair or performing some other incredible feat demonstrating great talent and hard work (or being a recruited athlete, of course), you are unlikely to be accepted to MIT. The #1 class rank will help immensely, but the SAT scores are well below the average there.

That’s FAR from the end of the world. There are many, many good science/engineering schools out there, and you’ll certainly be accepted to several of them.

is there any incredible thing i can do i a month?
i don’t have a lot of options since I shifted temporarily from usa. in usa, students have lots of options, oppurtunities etc. here i don’t. it was never really up to me.
i can contact the soccer coach, but i do 'nt have any movies to send.

would be ok if i give my sat again in jan… i’m sure i’ll get a 2300+
then my applications woul dhave jan and nov sat scores, and jan sat to be taken…

also, another main point of this thread is for u ppl to advice and give me names of colleges to select. i have the names for the toip ones but i need names for the ones at my level, and back up ones…
so i could also start gathering apps., it’s already getting late
