I have a major issue. I went to UNLV back in 2007 and ended up flunking out my first semester. My GPA was 0.0 and I was just a dumb kid back then. 6 years later I return to UNLV as a first year student and was able to start my classes. I received a notice saying that I am on academic probation for 2013-2014 semesters and need to maintain a 2.0 because of my flunked first semester 6 years ago. Ok no big. So I complete my first semester with a 3.5 GPA. I have already registered for classes for Spring 2014 to continue when I get another email saying I did not maintain a 2.0 GPA and had a 1.75 so I can not receive financial aid for Spring 2014. ***. I got 3 A’s and C+ making my GPA a 3.5. I haven’t even gotten a chance to complete my second semester to be able to show for a minimum of 2.0 GPA to be maintained and I am already getting screwed. Come to find out that they are figuring my first semester back in 2007 0.0 GPA with my 3.5 making it only 1.75…are you serious??? How do they expect anyone to pass if they are doing that?? Its been 6 years! The documentation didn’t say they would be factoring in my GPA from 2007, in fact I had been told previously that my record gets dropped from UNLV after 6 years…I was told I can appeal, but that rarely works…What can I do?! If I don’t go back to school I’ll lose my financial aid and I’ll be stuck paying back a loan for my semester in 2013…

You have not met satisfactory academic progress. You need to discuss this with unlv. Find out if they have an appeals process that will consider that your previous 0.0 GPa was a long time ago. You WILL need to file a SAP appeal .

What financial aid did you receive back in 2007?

“in fact I had been told previously that my record gets dropped from UNLV after 6 years”

Find the documentation that you had been informed of that policy, and take it along with you to your appeal meeting.

Did you recieve financial aid for your first semester?
What type?
If loans, are they paid back?

My first semester from 2007 I had a scholarship known as the “millennium” which was 10,000 a year. That was threatened of being taken away completely if I failed a second time. But since my dad at the time didn’t want to pay for another semester as punishment I never continued. Now I have student loans…with a small grant of 1,800

Most appeals do fail, because most students goof up in really dumb ways. This is an extremely unusual circumstance. Fill out the appeal. Talk to a FinAid officer in person, NOT on the phone, and not some flunky.

You need to file an appeal. One thing to look at: some schools have freshman forgiveness and allow students to replace grades. Check to see if there was any such policy under the catalog in effect when you started in 2007. If so, you can maybe repeat one or more than one class and instantly boost your gpa. If that is possible, I would mention it in my appeal letter.

im just curious, how do you get 0.0 gpa. did you not go to class. They are counting the first semester against you. your first got all F’S i would assume which resulted in academic and FA probation, you will have to pay out of pocket for the unlv, because fa requires 2.0 to be used. I think your options are going to community college to get some lower division classes, and GE done, so you can transfer when you have enough credits and your gpa is higher. community college is far cheaper than UNLV.
