Unmask Yourself!

Went to Costco this morning. 100% of adults in masks, mostly worn right. A few kids had them below their noses, but most were doing it right.

AND, right there in the very front of the store was a big display of masks! I got a box so that I can keep some in my car just in case even though I prefer cloth ones. $18.99 for a box of 50.

Our local school district released the results of the parent survey they did last month. 20% of parents said they would not be sending their child in a mask. Sigh. I’m so glad I am retired.

I have a hard time understanding adults that can not manage to wear a mask without complaining, yet I see little children wearing them without a peep. All patients visiting our clinic must be masked, and if the patient is getting allergy testing, they may be in the office for 3 hours. We have had ones as young as two years old in mask because their parents require them to wear them while in the office. Maybe the kids think they are fun, but most leave them on, and don’t touch them.

The mask many of these kids are wearing are so cute, and they all seem to fit so well! Thank you to those sewing for the kids, and making mask that appeal to them.

I don’t think masks are really workable for small kits – the K-3 students just aren’t going to be able to manage. Not only that, when a kid loses their mask or can’t get their mask replaced, it is the teacher who is going to have to put their hands on the mask and the child’s face to help the child. And the teacher is the most vulnerable person in the room. I also think that in a contained room with a lot of people, masks provide a false sense of security. So I do think they need to rethink best practices.

The idea of social distancing for little kids isn’t going to work either. Ever do playground duty at an elementary school? Little kids just don’t follow rules all that well.

I do think that schools can reopen in some areas with various adjustments and safety protocols in place – I just think that they need to rethink what those protocols are. There have been daycare centers operating all along to provide care for kids of essential workers, and as far as I know we haven’t seen any super-spreading event tied to a day care cener. “Some” areas means localities where Covid numbers are very low, with clear plans in place as to what will happen in the event there is a local uptick in cases.

D2’s BF has a 2 year old son. He stays with them every other weekend. A couple of months ago his mother began sending him with a mask. He wears it with no resistance whatsoever. Maybe because D2 and BF wear them.

I was a little surprised, to be honest, since a 2 year old couldn’t possibly understand the rationale for wearing it.

If teachers need to adjust a kids’ mask they can use hand sanitizer or gloves.

When I went to Japanese kindergarten, I adjusted and learned to behave like a Japanese kid not an American one.

A friend shared a photo of a mask display in a Target store - complete with mirror on the carousel so that you can see how you look in different masks as you try them on…

I’m sure nobody has thought about germs!

OMG, I would not even dream of trying a cloth mask on without sanitizing it first (unless it is a surgical mask from a box of multiples). I either iron them or steam first.

They don’t even let you try on sunglasses. I didn’t know anyone allowed trying on masks.

Haven’t been in a Target since February, but I’m assuming they’re repurposing an existing carousel. Should have covered up the mirrors though! The circular logic of having mirrors on a protective face mask display makes me dizzy!

OMG!!!

Re South Korea, as of today, South Korea has had 13,672 cases and 293 deaths. They have done a great job. I live in a different East Asian country and we also have a very low case rate. I believe this is primarily because of masks, although also because of a culturally-based self-distancing. I have stayed away from this thread because I don’t want to argue with people, but I am an American and it breaks my heart that the mask issue has become politicized and is costing lives and, really, making it harder to reopen - our life here is pretty normal. I go to work, I go to stores, my kids go to the gym, we do stay away from indoor restaurants as without the mask and in an enclosed space, it’s very hard to avoid risk. As to little kids, they can certainly wear a mask - here, the kids are masked and the schools are open.

Went to local hardware big box store & maybe 50% of the customers were wearing a mask. And this is in a city that requires masks. Sigh. I’m guessing they enter with a mask, then take it off. But I didn’t see anyone at the entrances spot checking either.

In the last several days, I’ve seen almost universal compliance with mask wearing in Dallas (which has mandated mask wearing in the county for inside interactions).

My D1’s school (she teaches K) sent out the information to parents today that they will be online learning for the first two months beginning in mid August. The school will reassess the situation based on the number of cases in San Diego in mid October before deciding when it is time to return to the classroom.

Went to Home Depot and Costco today. 100% mask compliance and it looked like everyone had them on correctly. Both spots also had sanitized carts. I picked up a box of disposable masks at Costco. I think they were 18 dollars for 50 masks.
Picked up lunch from a nearby restaurant and again if people weren’t eating they had masks on.
This week I’ve noticed a lot of young kids out with parents and it seems like the kids don’t seem to be bothered by wearing a mask. I didn’t see any kids playing with their masks.

Also went to Costco and TJ this morning. Border of Snohomish and King counties in WA. Masks everywhere. Saw just one nose sticking out and only one maskless lady in a face shield. Kiddos in disposable masks with Pokémon characters on them… cute. My TJ cashier was a dog lover. She had dogs all over her mask (cats here), so we chatted about pets.

We went to a tourist town in Rhode Island yesterday. H had forgotten his mask. When I asked the town chamber of commerce if they had masks for sale, they said no, but they could give me some. How many did I need? The town was 100% in the stores, 80% wearing them or pulling them up within close range on the streets.

Earlier this week I went into a store with my mask around my neck. I was thinking about what I needed to buy and not about the mask. Within a minute I saw an interesting pattern on another shopper’s mask and remembered to pull mine up.

Post…for no other reason than to have the thread not reset to the first post every time I open it.

Searching on Etsy for masks with my alma mater’s logo. So many sold out!
