I hate to say it ^^^ but that’s pretty much what I would expect at an indoor or outdoor restaurant. This is what you can’t control - you can’t control who gets placed at that table only a few feet away - you don’t know if they are staying in a SD bubble or not.
Exactly. Believe me, the staff is not exactly thrilled to be there either!

all wearing masks until they sat down<<<

I do LOL at some posts, what are you expecting in a restaurant?
They are going to take off the masks when they eat. That’s why I’m still only eating take out.
That’s the way it is where I live. Patrons are required to wear a face mask when not seated at their table. All staff who interact with diners wear a mask at all times. Not sure what else you expected. If people are eating and drinking, they can’t be wearing a mask.
I won’t even go to outside dining yet (and NJ doesn’t have indoor, which I believe is keeping our numbers down), but my understanding is that you keep your mask on while ordering and until the food comes, and any time you interact with staff, and/or get up for anything. That doesn’t seem to be what happened here.
I had lunch with 2 people yesterday on an outside patio (we were hot, but felt more comfortable outside) and we took our masks off as soon as we got to the table. The server was masked and gloved. I felt a little guilty, but I haven’t seen anyone at a restaurant table with a mask on (not that I’ve been to many, but pictures etc).
I think it’s just plain rude to not wear a mask when you are interacting with someone else who is wearing a make, particularly when they have no choice in the matter if they want to earn a living. It’s basically saying, you owe me protection but I don’t care about your safety at all.
^^^ I don’t disagree with that. But I think many people do think it’s ok. And if those people are gonna do it, I’m not going to be there to be part of it! So I don’t go to a restaurant!
Clearly “rude” is happening left and right and that’s why we are where we are!!
Two days ago is the first time I was out in our local woods and just about every jogger and bicyclist pulled up their mask when they passed us. Hikers were always good about masking up.
I am also in MA and have eaten at restaurants a half dozen times, both indoors and out. I haven’t seen anyone sitting at a table wearing a mask. The protocol has been to wear a mask entering or exiting the restaurant or if you leave the table for any reason, but while at the table it has been masks off. That is consistent with the signage in restaurants I have been in.
A couple of weeks ago we went to our favorite restaurant to celebrate my birthday. Sat outside on a wonderful patio… We noticed that our server was pregnant. You bet we all pulled our masks up when she approached us even though it was not required by the state (and I bet she appreciated this, too).
Some places require guests to keep their masks on when not eating even when seated at a table. I don’t see a problem with that.
Yesterday when I took an uber through Manhattan, I saw a lot of out people dining outside even though it was hot. From what I saw, they had mostly 2 people and 4 people tables, very few large tables. The tables were very far apart, some even had plexiglass between tables. I didn’t really see that many people wearing a mask while seated.
Based on what I have seen, I probably would feel comfortable to eat outdoor with someone I live with (I don’t live with anyone), but not with a friend because everyone has their own standard as to what is being “careful.”
This is what we have done. We have gone to eat outside but inside once. They sat us to close to each other so we asked for more distance and they doubled the seating area so it worked out fine.
My daughters been on some website with servers /waitresses maybe Facebook and she says they are saying not to go to restaurants due to the restaurants not fully following cleaning procedures, wearing masks etc… Makes me think…
I was visiting in Detroit and went to a restaurant that is known for breakfast. The owners are there and they have like a short order cook. Just getting some eggs etc. So I notice his face masks not over his nose but then at some point it was. Same for all the workers. This is a very clean place. Agh .
I have also notice at another local restaurant that when going inside to use the bathroom, the bartender not wearing a mask but making drinks… Another Agh…
My daughter doesn’t want us going to restaurants… She feels it puts the servers at risk. But of course they need to make money also.
@Knowsstuff - It is why I have been even reluctant in doing take out, especially when it comes to cold food like sushi. I have done take out of very hot food that I could microwave.
There is only one place where we will get sushi and raw foods. They’ve been open for take out since the beginning and the owner is very compliant with mask wearing and cleaning.
The restaurant near my office is a big no go for me, even outdoors. I see their staff prepping for open all the time and no one wears masks in and out of the kitchen. They also are notorious for not covering their noses when interacting with customers.
We’ve eaten out once and even though everyone was mask wearing and it was nearly empty, I still didn’t feel great. Felt like an unnecessary risk so we’re sticking to take out for the time being. We’re lucky that there are some restaurant doing super high end take out right now.
I agree. Around here we call those places Bait shops. ![]()
We were shocked when our sheltering in place without going anywhere kids said they had sushi delivered. The kids - both immunology PhDs - said that they felt safe eating cold food because all research at that point strongly indicated that the virus does not spread by ingestion. Of course the other things like food-borne bacteria and parasites are always a concern, so the sushi they had were cooked shrimp and fake crab.
I would love to have some sushi now. I haven’t had it since March.
@oldfort - we went ahead and ate sushi twice. I bought it from the sushi counter at our upscale grocery store that also has a hydroponic herb growing tower, a pizza restaurant, and a wine bar with outdoor seating. I wiped the tops of the boxes, and we scarfed the sushi down. So far, so good.
No bad effects. I hear that ginger and seaweed have some antiviral qualities (IMO, that is total bunk but who cares - both are tasty).
