Unmask Yourself!

An article in the NY Times last week suggested that superspreading is due more to circumstances (events with lots of people in close contact) than to individual characteristics.

If that’s the case, they should absolutely limit large gatherings. That seems less disruptive than shutting down shops, services. No big weddings but people can have more ordinary life.

I’m a first responder in Northern New Jersey and deal with hundreds of people on a weekly basis. I wear a mask all day, every day unless I’m by myself in my own personal vehicle, in my own home. The area I work in is predominantly minority, low income and I have to say a good 95% of people wear masks in public. New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy has managed the pandemic pretty well. The local communities really educated its residents on importance of social distancing, mask wearing ect…This is the most densely populated are in the entire United States and our numbers are currently minimal. Hoping it stays that way.

Southern California here. Only wear N95 when can’t avoid being within 6 ft of other people.

From what I have seen, you need to have several circumstances line up to be a super spreader. If one of them doesn’t exist, you won’t be. If you have a large viral load but stay home, you will not be a super spread (and may not spread at all). If you go out to large gatherings but have a small viral load, you won’t likely be a super spreader either.

In Ohio, I wear masks when inside at stores, work, etc. Outside rarely wear one. Cleveland now mandates one so if outside at work, I wear one. But if we walk in a park or on a hiking trail, we do not wear them. Number of people we encounter is very small. Easy to step aside and give people room. A few people wear them on the trails but small minority. Eaten inside at two restaurants. One on fathers day in a private room. Other time was downtown at lunch for work. Each time everyone working had on masks. People wore them to the restaurant but took them off when they got there. Vast majority of people inside stores are wearing them but not all. Though ultimately I have gone to few stores in the last several months.

If there are places where I think I would need a mask, I am not going there. Have eaten outside with family without masks. Sit a distance apart with outside air.

What a difference leadership makes. I went into a DFW Walmart this morning and all but 1 adult was wearing a mask. Before the governor’s order, compliance was at about 40% on a good day. This should have happened back in March.

Suburban Maryland between DC and Baltimore.

I see 100% compliance with state and local requirements here, and I follow those requirements.

I wear a mask anytime I am indoors anywhere but my own home.

I wear a mask outside if I can’t maintain 6 foot physical distancing.

I do not wear a mask when walking or running outside in my neighborhood. I might need to pass someone coming towards me on a path or sidewalk, but everyone does a step to the right little dance to make space.

I have socialized, outside, in small groups, with room to distance ourselves.

We have had very few non residents inside our house since March 1: HVAC guy, my son and his wife who live nearby, a couple of my daughter’s friends.

We have spent some time with extended family, mostly outside but moving in and out of their house occasionally, for a baby gender reveal, Mother’s Day and Father’s Day.

We each have several professionally sewn cloth masks with filter pockets, and a small cache of disposable surgical masks.

Since mid March, have been to my hair stylist, dentist, a doctor’s appointment, grocery stores, Lowe’s, REI, Target and Pier One. Every place limited numbers inside until recently. All require masks for entry. Recently grocery stores and Lowe’s are no longer limiting customers (at least not in a way I can tell.) but all the other places of business do limit the. Umber of people allowed inside at once.

We have ordered take out food, but have not returned to outdoor restaurant seating. We have not, and will not, return to the gyms or movie theaters, or sporting events for a long time to come.

We have cancelled three vacations this spring and summer. No more are on the books.

This is a marathon and we are only on mile 4.

Baby kid came over last night to drop off her income tax papers… we both wore masks because she has been out and about a little bit. I did not even have to ask her… our public health expert.

I have an X=1. My biller’s brother went partying, against family’s wishes. He passed on the virus to my friend, her mom, and step-father currently hospitalized. My friend and her mom are seriously ill.

My take on this is that I don’t want to be close, for any length of time, to a carrier (or possible carrier, meaning irresponsible behaviors).

Let me try this one more time - the last post I tried to post got flagged for moderation. I’m editing out or changing what I think could have been the problem…

Maybe this has been going around but today was the first I’ve seen it. It’s tongue in cheek.

Masks can be a fashion statement.

^So far, designers haven’t come ups with a design that looks good to me.

What are your thoughts on PM2.5 filter? Is it any good? Is it harmful?

I see influencers starting this also. This is what needs to happen like overseas. Make it cool to wear a mask. It shouldn’t be, should I
It should be which mask goes better with my outfit… Lol.

Advertisers are marketing it as practically an N95 or KN95 equivalent. It’s not. It might be better than a cloth mask by itself, only because the more layers, the more droplets can be stopped. Technically a covid virus on its own can go through a PM2.5.

Since I have quite a large nose, I am very happy wearing a mask!

My Vera Bradley masks are supposed to arrive today. I’m very excited

OMG! LOL @MaineLonghorn I never thought of it that way. I used to like my nose fine until older S broke it as a toddler. I was helping him get dressed standing behind him squatting, when he jumped up and his head hit my nose. Ugh. I’ve hated it every since. I can see this as a benefit!

Ha, yep. I never realized my nose was big until I overheard a girl in high school say I looked like the Wicked Witch of the West. When I looked at myself in profile, I thought, “Ugh, she’s right…”

We attended a family event this past weekend where there were no masks and no social distancing. I’m still crossing my fingers that no one comes down with anything.

Originally the plan had been for it to be at my house. It was myself, my husband and son. Then my daughter and her boyfriend who were visiting from Pittsburgh (which is experiencing a spike right now), then my sister, her husband and my mother up from CT. I had figured out how we could have all the chairs arranged so that everyone could stay in their little groups and we could all visit since we hadn’t all been together since Christmas.

Then my sister told me that they had more outdoor space and they could do it better at their house and she wanted to host it. So we drove down to her house in CT. Well it turns out that they set up chairs all right next to each other, and in addition to the people I listed above, we had both her children and their spouses. A total of 12 people, who live in three different states, 5 of whom are still going into work on a daily basis (cashier, state cop, hospital admin, bank teller, and car mechanic). When we arrived I asked if people were wearing masks and my sister said no, we don’t need that, its all just family. Well ok then. I’ll admit that it was a great time. Now its been four days and no reports of anyone getting sick. In another week I’ll relax about this.

I would have turned around and driven home @me29034
