@momofsenior1 I bought two Vera masks this week. They are lighter weight that then ones I have and that’s what I was looking for. Some people have complained that they are too big/loose. I just tied off each ear elastic a bit and now they fit great. I also put two layers of coffee filter in the filter holder. I was able to get them at the hospital gift shop where I work so I didn’t have to order them. Good price too.
I find it’s nice to have a variety for different purposes. It’s been so hot this week that I have been washing them by hand when I get home from work and then set them out in the 95 degree sun - they dry in no time!
@momofsenior1 I have gotten 5 Vera Bradley masks already (sold at my local Hallmark store). First I got one for me, then my daughter decided she liked it better than what she had, then my husband decided he liked it better than what he had. So now all of us like the Vera Bradley ones best. They fit well over my daughter’s big nose and small chin (this is her description not mine). They also give you some room to breath inside so they can be worn for longer periods of time (not too tight fitting).
BTW the first ones I bought I argued at the register for them not to be taxed as clothing is not taxed in NJ. I have since been told they should be taxed as they are not clothing but accessories or protective wear which are taxable.
What are peoples feelings about the people who are not laundering their masks, reusing disposable masks for weeks? It has been very obvious to me that many people are doing this because I see dirt, makeup etc on the mask itself. I was at an event this past weekend and was appalled at the “dirty” masks people wore. Also, where do people generally put their masks when they wear them into a restaurant and then take it off to eat? I haven’t really been into a restaurant to eat so I haven’t seen how this is handled. Would it be advised to put the mask into a baggie or something while eating to avoid it getting germs on it?
people rewear masks because of they are trying to stretch their supply - they have few or can’t afford to purchase more.
they don’t think about the need to wash or replace.
People can be lazy! It literally takes one minute to wash a mask by hand w/soap and they can dry overnight! (not disposable kind)
I have a compartment in my purse that I have designated for masks only - so if I take it off in the car or where ever (no restaurants for me) that is where I put them.
A disposable mask that you have only worn for an hour can be sanitized by leaving it out in the sun. Obviously if it’s covered with make up it’s probably been worn to long. But since the main use of the mask it to slow the flow of air out from you, I doubt a bit of dirt is a big issue. If doctors in hospitals are reusing masks I figure we can too.
I have learned though that there is no point to wearing lip color now though - it just comes off when you put on your mask! We will all save on lip color!
That’s disappointing to hear. CT is doing so well with its CV numbers, I hate to hear that people are getting careless. I have an N95 that I wear with a cheapie mask over it, so I may have stayed and distanced myself a bit, but I would’ve driven my mother home.
We are currently on vacation and last night found ourselves in a small and distanced crowd (awaiting a hot apple fritter order). We were outside and 99% were wearing masks. I told my H that this is a great time for celebs to be out and about like regular folks as they won’t be easily recognized!
I have worn a mask since beginning of March. Even though the advice of the CDC at the time was “no mask”, somehow common sense to me said it would be better than nothing.
My biggest issue now is my elderly father. He spend half his time in CA and half in our state. He wears a mask but only in stores and on airplanes otherwise he thinks it’s fine to socialize with whomever. He and his elderly siblings hang out together, have dinner, and meanwhile they in turn are hanging out with their kids, grandkids, friends, etc. We have begged and pleaded but none of them seem to care or think that they could catch this virus even though their area is a hotspot. He says “I’m careful” meaning he wears a mask in a store, but I told him unless you are social distancing and masked up while socializing with family it still makes him exposed to all those people collectively. What annoys me the most is two of my aunts and two of my cousins are nurses but they participate too! I have given up trying to convince any of them to change their behavior as it just doesn’t register.
I wear Lipsense lip color and it doesn’t come off. It lasts all day, so is perfect for masks. Not that I’ve worn it as much since March, but I do a couple times a week if I go out or have an important video meeting.
Feeling even more sympathy for folks who live in hot and humid climates than ever. I’ve had to leave two stores and walk away from folks due to the increasing heatwave and humidity in our area. As a person with asthma, I can tell you it is HARD to breath with a mask on in humid weather.
I’ve only been out to eat once in a restaurant and left my mask dangling from my ear because I didn’t have a good place to put it. I may start putting a paper bag in my purse so there is a “safe” spot to put the mask in the future.
I don’t have asthma, so I don’t have difficulty breathing in a mask in the heat, but I find it very unpleasant. At work I can wear one for many hours, but it’s very cold in operating rooms. Makes a huge difference.
I made pleated masks that we like but wanted some more and didn’t want to risk the crowds at the craft stores so I ordered a couple of the shaped ones from a vendor on Etsy. They came last week. Cute, lighter fabric than the ones I made but a good fit. Little pink flamingos on one and chili peppers on the other. Now we each have 4.
I thought my mask-sewing days were over (at least for a few months), but my niece asked me to sew some for her. While I was at it, I cut eight more for DD. I figure she will need 8-10 per day when school starts. She will have enough that she can switch out every period (as the cloth ones get damp) without reusing a possibly contaminated mask.
I don’t hand wash mine. I throw the homemade ones in the washing machine after every use (and one use = about a half hour for my purposes). My sister has N95 masks that they spray down with Lysol and then let air dry for a couple of days.
Here in TX I wear one whenever I go out. Even before it was required like it is now. I just made my so and his gf enough so they could wear one a day for the week (actually more than that to give them a good choice). Their campus and their college town both have mandatory mask policies so they will be wearing them all day long every day. I feel like all I do now is make masks for family and friends. I have another batch to make tonight!
Why does she need so many every day? Is she in some sort of special environment that causes the need for so much mask changing?
S is working 8 hour shifts as a cashier and has been using one per day. I was planning to send him to school with about five which I figure will probably last him a week or two since school will probably be only a couple of hours of in person classes per day at most and he will probably make a mask last more than one day.
Interestingly, when we walked by one local park last night, we saw several groups of youngsters sitting on the grass or walking around… all in masks. This is new.
Its now reached a point where I am beginning to realize, face masks are here to stay; so much so that I’ve started looking for ‘cute’ masks, to replace my surgical masks!
‘Cute’ masks are the new designer bag, lol!
Heck yeah. I bought a fancy one from Nordstrom so I don’t shred my favorite team-logo masks to pieces. It is made of silk and cotton and is very lightweight.
