Unoffered AP 3's.... good or bad? U can chance aswell :)

<p>My school is very, VERY rural and does not offer many difficult classes at all. I decided to study a little and take some AP exams anyways, :slight_smile: and got two 3’s and a 5 in the histories. Will Brown frown upon getting so-so scores or could this be a good thing?</p>

<p>What do you all think my chances for admittance to Brown is? NOBODY from my area (Eastern Kentucky) even applies. If any even go to college, it’s to the small CC in town. A little about me: My dad died when I was three and I was reared in Eastern Kentucky by a single mom. </p>

<p>Hah, I guess you could say I’m poor? My EFC on the FAFSA will probably be 0. Mom took a few classes through U of Phoenix and hers was 0.</p>

<p>SAT I: N/A</p>

<p>SAT II: U.S. History: 650 World History: 770</p>

<p>ACT w/ Writing: 31</p>

<p>Unweighted GPA: 4.0 (School does not calculate a weighted GPA, If they did it would be higher.)</p>

<p>Class Rank: 1 of 195</p>

<p>AP’s: US H: 3 Euro H:3 World H: 5 (I never took any AP classes; none were offered. I just decided to sign up for the tests lol.)</p>

<p>Senior Course Load: Tough (Dual-Credit English and Pre-Cal, Calc, Geography, Physics, AP Enviro Sci, Adv Topics in Math, Biology II)</p>

<h2>Awards: Quest Bridge Ntl College Match Finalist, WYMT Mountain Student Achiever, Graduation Marshall, Voted Smartest in Class 4 years straight (is this an award lol?), Who’s Who in Band and Honor Roll</h2>

<p>Extracuriculars: I worked for the majority of this year at the local supermarket to help pay for food (I’m not kidding lol.) Before that I was in band as a section leader and now I’m on the academic team. Nothing stellar like 1st chair state, but always busy with EC’s.</p>

<p>Vol: Little Side Projects, Church Work</p>

<p>Summer Activities: Local College Camp Program</p>

<p>Essays: Good</p>

<p>Recommendations: Superb (Best kid they’ve ever seen)</p>

<p>Interview: None</p>

<p>State: I live in Virginia, go to school in Eastern Kentucky (think hatfield and mccoy fued :P)
School: Public
Race: White
Hooks: 1st Generation to actual college campus, nobody in this area EVER applies to Ivy.</p>

<p>Strengths: Location, Appalachian (?), Poor?
Weaknesses: No giant list of Vol’s or EC’s</p>

<p>I’m not an admissions officer, but I’m impressed with someone who self-studies for APs and gets 3s and 5s. Outside of the world of College Confidential, a 3 is a good score. You should be very proud of what you accomplished.</p>

<p>The fact that you do not have a laundry list of ECs is not a weakness in your application. Brown (and every other school out there) understands when a student needs to work. I certainly hope you included your job and the number of hours you worked in your application.</p>

<p>Congratulations on your accomplishments. I don’t do chances, but you are clearly a strong candidate. </p>

<p>I looked at your prior posts, which lists where else you’ve applied. I hope you are happy with your safety schools – and can afford them. I don’t know how those schools handle financial aid. You might want to consider applying to schools that might give you a lot of merit aid. I’m a little concerned that you applied to almost every Ivy (plus Duke). There are a lot of great schools out there that are not Ivies that you should probably consider, where your chances would be even higher.</p>

<p>I would think sending in the AP scores would be a good thing…it shows you are self-motivated. </p>

<p>I also came from a small farm town in the midwest- my high school offered only one AP class. </p>

<p>I think your stats are pretty impressive - and being first generation is definitely a hook at Brown.</p>

<p>He doesn’t need to send in his AP scores (that costs too much money), just include them in his application.</p>

<p>I self studied one ap and got a 4. I noticed that lots of people on cc have so many ECs; i only have swimming and basketball as mine; no vol; no [significant] awards. But I believe that Brown can see when an applicant has truth and quality.</p>

<p>I think you should send in the 3s because they shows initiative and perseverance to self-study. They will be able to tell that you are severely hindered in your academic and EC pursuits and the 3s will not hurt you IMO. </p>

<p>I don’t chance but I think you will end up somewhere wonderful. I’m rooting for you!</p>

<p>Thank you all. I was concerned because it seems that everyone on the forum is AMAZING and it seemed that a score of 3 was a bad thing.</p>
