Unpaid Internship, Side Job?

I have an unpaid internship in DC. I will be living in university-affliated housing. I am looking for a part-time temp job, preferably something like restaurants, 2-3 nights a week. Does anyone have any ideas? I have no restaurant experience, but I want to make some money.

Try getting jobs through temporary employment agencies. You probably can get some clerical jobs evenings and/or weekends. I never had a prob getting such jobs when I lived in D.C. summers and when I was in grad school.

What are the names of the temporary employment agencies?

Just look them up in the yellow pages or Google. Back in the days before the internet, I just looked through the Yellow Pages and applied at all of the temp agencies in D.C. They were happy to have someone with good typing, spelling and grammtical skills, and I had an easy time getting placements.

Assuming that you get to D.C. a few weekdays before your internship begins, just head to the temp agencies, take their typing tests, fill out their apps, and be willing to work weekends and evenings. I was easily able to find jobs that were easy to get to by public transportation. There are lots of associations and similar places that need clerical help around K St. NW and Wisconsin Ave., bothof which are easy to reach by public trans.

I hope you’re not bothering to bring a car to D.C. Public trans is excellent, parking is horrible – few spaces, high costs. D.C. driving and traffic is awful.

Tenisghs, if the job situation in DC is anything like around here, there are many, many places begging for workers - usually for the type of relatively low paid, parttime work you are looking for. My D is planning on doing the same thing this summer, and I know she is concerned about all the jobs being taken before she gets home in early June, but every 3rd business here has a sign out, so I don’t think there will be a problem. If you have any time at all, I would look around the neighborhood where you will be living, as well as the area of your internship, and see if you can just find something, as well as trying the temp agencies.

Cangel, the zip codes where I will live and work are 20215 and 20008.
