Hello everyone, I am going to be an upcoming junior at a decent high school where I would say I’m in a pretty decent position; however I haven’t taken any APs and next year will be my first year taking AP Bio. But I do have honor classes so it’s not like my schedule is only regular classes. I have EC’s that I have grown a passion for one of them being a service club and I have great interest in helping others. Now my question is are there jobs out there for studying Cardiology? I would like to go to medical school but I fear I won’t be able to succeed well enough to become say a surgeon, but I have taken interest in cardiology and would like to see if there are favorable opportunities to pursue. I plan on going to UCI but if I fail to get acceptance then I plan on falling back to say UCR or CSULB. I am honestly ver confused and alittle bit worried because I don’t know what’s going to happen during college. Thank you.

Most applicants that are applying to the UC’s will have anywhere from 5-10 AP classes under their belt by the end of the their Senior year. The UC’s highly consider academic rigor so if your fellow HS students are taking many AP classes while you are not, you will not be very competitive on the UC applications. I would definitely try to incorporate at least 1-2 AP classes in your schedule this year. Also study hard for the ACT/SAT and if possible try to shadow someone in the medical field as an EC to see if Medical school would be something you want to pursue. Good Luck to you.

@Gumbymom that’s what really does worry me, with my original plan I would have only completed 3 AP courses at the end of my high school experience. I can’t throw in another AP for next year due to the fact that schedules are unfortunately final. Have I made a grave mistake and jeopardized my chances of getting into University of California Irvine?

1) How many AP classes are available at your HS?
2) How many AP classes do most students take in their 4 years?
Admissions will look at the rigor at your high school and compare you to your fellow HS students along with the other applicants. 3 AP classes is not bad and you said you have some Honors classes, so your courses do show some rigor.
All you can do now is get good scores on your SAT/ACT, show dedication to your EC’s, write great essays and hope for the best come application time. It is hard to say what your chances will be since you have not posted any STATs. Good Luck.
