Unsure of MSE path

Hello, I am 2nd year material science engineering majored student. When I applied to college two years ago, my college adviser strongly suggested me to major in MSE field, because he believed that this field has bright future. I did not have any interest in engineering before back then, but I choose to follow my adviser’s advice. I got accepted to one of good engineering school, but now I feel anxious because I think I am not passionate about MSE enough to handle all stress during studying hard stuff for next few years. I struggled to find a solution until now because I don’t have any another major I am interested in. I don’t know if I should stick to this field… I am sure that I will have good opportunities to have job if I successfully graduate in this field. How did you guys find the engineering major appealing during your high school? I feel very worried because I am not sure what I like to study in my end of second year of college.

If you don’t enjoy it at all, then you should probably shouldn’t do it. It will make your college years stink and you may not end up with a satisfying career. You need to do some soul searching on things you do enjoy.

Are there any things you have been fascinated with? Or topics you just enjoyed learning?

For me personally, I had enjoyed space related topics and aircraft and rockets since I was a toddler and when I was like 12, after having years of fun building things with Legos, I heard about engineering and knew I from then on I would go into aerospace engineering when I was older. So I found engineering appealing before high school, but the idea is I was passionate for aerospace stuff. So, you just need to find what you are passionate about and go for it, even if it isn’t engineering.

Are you interested in any other engineering field besides MSE? Don’t keep forcing yourself to like the subject just because you believe the job prospects will be good when you graduate; you’re gonna be miserable for the rest of your life or you might go back to school and spend more money. Switch out now if you’re doubting yourself but do realize that since you are changing majors this late in the game, you might have to stay for an extra year depending on what major you choose. It’ll be easier if you choose a different type of engineering since a lot of the subjects tend to overlap your first couple of years.

As for me, I bounced around engineering for a bit. In high school, I loved math and physics so I thought engineering was the way to go. I started as a Computer Science major because I wanted to learn more about computers but I realized I didn’t want to spend the rest of my life looking at code so I switched to Aerospace Engineering. Then I realized that I should play it safe and choose a broader major and switched to Mechanical Engineering. I kind of had a love/hate relationship with it at times but I don’t regret graduating with the major. I really like designing and analyzing things so I think the major is great for me.
