I am a freshmen at a University, and enrolled in a mid-level math class.
I do not perform well on this classes math tests. We have had 4 exams, and my average among all 4 tests is a 56%. I have been visiting the professor an going over my tests. I have a tutor through the university, and have been to all the lectures and labs. I have asked the professor what else can I do to help me with the topic, or to increase my score…and he responds with “I truly don’t know, you have done everything I can recommend” and he leaves it at that.
I feel like If even the professor cant recommend what to do, then I am at a loss for what to do.
If the class has TAs, you may want to ask some of them, since each may have a different way of explaining something that may be easier for you to understand.
I suggest you try a new study technique that forces you to actively use the material rather than listening to the explanations of your teacher and TAs. Here’s a link about using self-explanation to study math: http://www.learningscientists.org/blog/2016/7/12-1 You could use your time with the tutor to explain things to the tutor (rather than the tutor explaining to you), which would ensure you were understanding the material correctly. Given how much effort you are putting into the class, this technique should really pay off for you!
