Unused Medications

I recently had eye surgery (cataract removal). Post-surgery ,my opthamologist prescribed eye drops that I used for a month. Two of the drops were quite expensive: Prolenza ($327) and Inveltys ($291). I have a deductible before my prescription coverage kicks in so I ended up paying cash for these two medications. I did one eye surgery at the end of last year and the other last month. I don’t use all the medication after the first surgery and the doctor said it was fine to use the medication for the second surgery. Just to be sure I didn’t run out, I refilled the two expensive prescriptions. Long story short–I ended up not using either of the eye drops that I refilled. The drops are unopened and in a box–my pharmacy won’t take them back. It seems crazy to throw them out–does anyone know if I can donate these medications to a medical facility??

If the bottles are sealed, see if your eye doctor will take them. That’s what I did with mine. I asked if maybe there was someone who could use them who might not have RX coverage. They took them…I don’t know what they did with them after that.

Yes, your doctor may be the only option that results in them being used. But I wouldn’t be surprised if liability risks don’t allow it, no matter how sealed it is/appears to be.

Our police station accepts unused prescriptions - I assume are destroyed with greater care then just dumping them in a landfill.

Some veterinary practices used to take some Rx.

@Richinpitt Google local pharmacies your area that have disposal boxes. Like a postal bin, you can open it a crack, deposit, and the box us emptied for proper elimination.

Police in my area.no longer take them. Have to check. .

The police station drop offs don’t accept liquid left over medications around here. ?

The vet accepted unused meds for donation after our dog died.

sirium.org may take your unused, unopened meds., you may even request a tax donation

My retired allergist used to take my unused meds and and give them to patients who couldn’t afford them. It’s tough that it’s so hard to donate unused meds. I used to donate meds to medical missions but no longer have a contact for them.
