Unusual Roommate Issue

Fudgemaster, you are out of line. The OP didn’t pretend to “diagnose” Elsie. Indeed, the parents of kids who are on the spectrum were the ones who brought it up.

My daughter has pointed out that people she knows have had roommates not that different from Elsie (who don’t talk to them at all, are on the computer all the time – she didn’t say anything about curtains and lights). No one had the sense these kids had Asberger’s – they just saw them as anti-social.
As Twisted said upthread, the roomies had to learn to deal or had to move.

I think the real issue is that there are two people in the same room whose needs don’t mesh well together.

The poster’s daughter could benefit from a roommate who can provide friendship and support that the current roommate doesn’t provide. Nobody’s right, nobody’s wrong, it’s just two people not working out together. It really doesn’t matter if the reason is personality, a disability, or anything else.

As the mom of an RA, I agree with the poster who said that the daughter should ask her RA to help her approach the powers that be. And the focus of the discussion should be on what the poster’s daughter needs to be happy and successful at school, and where she feels the gaps are in her current residential situation.

This should give housing the info they need to start assessing the situation and coming up with a plan that would be better for everyone. There might be someone who finds her roommate too intrusive or messy and is wishing for a roommate like Elsie.

If a move can’t be made, the poster’s daughter and RA need to come up with a plan for addressing the biggest issue, which seems to be that the other young woman talks aloud a lot to the computer. It’s easy to see how distracting that could be to someone trying to study or sleep.

Thank you!

In reading this thread I am amazed at the blaming, sarcasm, and snark that comes from some of the people who are replying. Thanks for a clear explanation of the issue and an approach to a solution.

Ancient thread, but holy hilarious. I seriously doubt the girl described in OP has autism. Do you think all boys who are hooked on video games have autism? She is probably a redditor or similar who loves the Internet and would get a kick out of this thread if she knew of its existence.

lol, yeah, I totally lost it when the OP started complaining how the roommate didn’t keep any stuffed animals or other tokens of self-infantilization on her bed.

Or the assumption that my lovely daughter got stuck with an antisocial ■■■■■ for a roommate and is now unhappy merits the title “Unusual Roommate Issue.”

old but gold
