Unususal enrollment history

My fafsa has been flagged this year for unusual enrollment. When I talked to the school it was because I didn’t recieve credit at another school the previous semester. I recently had to fill out an appeal and submit my medical records to the school for them to look at. This is the first this has happen to me and I just wanted to know is there anyone out there that can explain this more? How often do appeals get accepted?

@kelsmom may have ideas for you, but it would be best for you to discuss this situation with your current school. The people there are the ones who can give the most accurate assessment.

The UEH Flag is intended to address possible abuse in the Title IV student aid programs; specifically, when a student attends an institution long enough to receive a Title IV credit balance, leaves without completing the enrollment period, and then enrolls at another institution, repeating the pattern of remaining just long enough to collect a Title IV credit balance without earning any academic credit. The school has to examine the financial aid history and academic transcripts for the previous four award years to determine if the student received credit during the semesters in which Title IV aid was received and if not, they need to document reasons why.The school must determine whether the documentation supports (1) the reasons given by the student for the student’s failure to earn academic credit; and (2) that the student did not enroll only to receive credit balance funds. Ultimately, the school has the responsibility of determining whether or not you can receive aid … if they deny it, they have to tell you what you can do to regain eligibility in the future.

What if it had something to do with illness?

Submit any requested documentation, plus anything else that you think may be relevant, and let the school make a determination.

I can’t tell you what the school will do, because I don’t have all of the facts. It is certainly possible to document reasons related to illness that would allow the school to resolve the UEH. I just can’t tell you that what you have submitted will be considered acceptable by your school. It is possible they will consider it acceptable, but you have to wait until you get their decision to know for sure. Make sure you submitted everything they need (transcripts from other schools, letters from physicians or the documentation you submitted to your school for your medical withdrawal, etc.).

@kelsmom it wasn’t a medical withdrawl, but more of a medical interference. I have been dealing with depression for the past few years now and it interfered with my studies the most during the 2016-2017 semester.

Did you submit some type of documentation, such as a doctor’s note? If not, you may want to contact whomever processes the appeals to find out if you need to submit any additional documentation for your appeal.

I submitted my medical records regarding mental health and a doctors statement

is it possible for me to do work study if it gets denied?

Federal work study is part of your financial aid through FAFSA filing. You can always get a job that isn’t work study. Some schools have their own work study funds, but not many.

Did you NOT meet Satisfactory Academic Progress? If that is the case, and your appeal is denied…you will not be eligible to receive financial aid…and federal work study is a form of financial aid.

But you can look for a regular part time job…that is NOT funded with work study funds.

I didn’t meet SAP at the last school I attended, but as I stated earlier it was because of health reasons. Also does vocational rehab help with school tuition? Is there any other way for me to get my financial aid reinstated?

First of all, you MIGHT get your tuition reinstated. When will you get an answer about your appeal? I know it’s difficult, but you have to wait … you will not get your aid any other way than to have the appeal approved. As far as voc rehab is concerned, that is something separate from the school … you’ll need to contact the voc rehab office.

Another thing I want to ask is if you have been flagged for unusual enrollment for one year does it happen every year after? This has been the first year this has happen to me.

You might get flagged again, based on what years are being looked at. If so, you can contact the school to ask them if they need anything other than what they already have on file.

So because I was having health reasons and have proof that I had health reason during the 2016-2017 school term there’s no guarantee I can’t get financial aid ever again?

Please contact your school financial aid office to ask about your personal situation and what might happen in the future. It is impossible for me to provide you with a for-sure answer, because it depends on your enrollment pattern, your documentation, your school, and the policy your school has in place for being able to receive aid in the future if it is denied for UEH this year.
